Genesis 43:34
And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin’s mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him. And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin’s mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.
At the feast Joseph himself ate apart from his brothers, for among the Egyptians it was counted an abomination to eat bread with Hebrews. His brothers he had set at table in order from the eldest to the youngest according to birthright, as if he knew their ages exactly, and this astonished them. From what was set before him he sent portions out to them, but Benjamin's portion was five times as large as any of theirs. In that larger portion he showed his particular regard for Benjamin as his own mother's son.
The special favor was also a proving of his brothers, to see whether they still looked upon Benjamin with the same envy and hatred they had once felt toward Joseph himself. Because they supposed he did not understand their language, they talked freely together in his presence, and this gave him opportunity to watch them and learn the true state of their feelings without their knowing it. So they ate and drank with him and were merry with him, not knowing who he was.
