If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food:
The Egyptian ruler had solemnly warned the brothers that they would not see his face unless their youngest brother was with them. Judah therefore told Jacob that the sons would go down to Egypt to buy food only if Jacob sent Benjamin with them, and otherwise they would not go. Their grain from Egypt had been consumed, and severe want and hunger made the need for more food urgent. Jacob and his children and their households were calling for food.
Time had already been lost in which they could have gone to Egypt and returned. Jacob clung to Benjamin with a mother's love because of the loss of Joseph. Judah backed the condition by becoming surety for Benjamin, guaranteeing his safe return. He promised to bear the blame forever if he did not bring him back.
Need at last compelled Jacob to let Benjamin go. He sent with them a present for the ruler and double money, including the money found in their sacks.
