Genesis 43:8
And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones. And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.
Judah pressed his father to send the lad with him, that they might arise and go to Egypt to obtain food and live and not die, both Jacob himself and his sons and also their little ones, for hunger pressed upon Jacob and his children and their households were calling for food. Jacob resisted because he clung to Benjamin with all the strength of a mother's love after the loss of Joseph. Benjamin had to go because the man, the Egyptian ruler, had solemnly protested that they would not see his face and would not be received into his presence unless their youngest brother was with them.
Judah offered himself as surety for his brother, pledging to stand responsible for bringing Benjamin back and to bear the blame before his father forever if he failed to bring him back. He argued that the time lost in lingering through unwillingness to send Benjamin could already have allowed them to journey to Egypt and return again. Want at last compelled Jacob to permit Benjamin to go, and in letting him go he sent also a present to obtain the ruler's favor and directed his sons to take double money and to return the money found in their sacks in case it had been placed there by mistake.
