Genesis 44:26
And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, except our youngest brother be with us. And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, except our youngest brother be with us.
In this verse Judah is speaking to Joseph apart from his brothers to explain why Benjamin had to come to Egypt and why he must be allowed to return. During the famine Benjamin had stayed with Jacob while ten brothers went to Egypt to buy grain, and Joseph, whom they did not recognize, had required them to bring Benjamin down. The verse states the brothers' explanation that they could not go down to Egypt without their youngest brother, because without him they would not be allowed to see the ruler's face. Judah repeats this condition to explain Jacob's unwillingness and reluctance to let Benjamin go to Egypt.
Judah recalls his own pledge to be surety for Benjamin and to bear the blame forever if he did not bring the lad back to his father. Jacob grieved greatly over the loss of Joseph, and Benjamin is all that is left of the mother Jacob loved. Jacob's life is bound up in the lad's life, so that separation from Benjamin would kill him and bring him to the grave in sorrow. Because he cannot meet his father without Benjamin with him, Judah offers to remain as a bondman and slave in Benjamin's place so the lad can go up and return with his brothers to Jacob.
