Genesis 44:6

And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.

This verse belongs to the account of Joseph's dealings with his brothers when they came to Egypt during the famine, when they bowed before him without recognizing him while he recognized them and recalled his dreams. The one who overtakes and speaks is Joseph's steward, the governor's servant, who catches the brothers just after they have left the city on their way out of Egypt. His words confront the brothers with the charge of returning evil for the good shown to them by stealing the cup.

The stolen cup is Joseph's silver cup. It is also identified as the king's silver cup. The cup was presented to the brothers as a cup used for divining. The cup was believed to detect poison and was valued as protection against murder by poisoning.
