Genesis 44:7

And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:

When overtaken outside the city, the brothers are confronted by the steward with the charge of repaying good with evil by stealing the silver drinking-cup belonging to Joseph. At that charge they ask why their lord speaks such words to them. They protest their innocence, declaring that they would never do such a thing and treating the accusation as unthinkable for them. They point to their return of the money found in their sacks as proof of their honesty. Having carried that money back to Egypt from Canaan after finding it at their sacks' mouths, they argue that they would not steal silver or gold from their lord's house, so such theft would make no sense. Their claim to honesty parallels their earlier claim to be honest in Genesis 42, which Joseph doubted.
