Joseph Weeps as He Reveals Himself to His BrothersBible World

Genesis 45:1

Then Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him; and he cried, Cause every man to go out from me. And there stood no man with him, while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren.

Joseph could no longer conceal his feelings because he was so deeply affected by his brothers' repentance. His proving of his brethren was finished, for he was satisfied that he had seen in them the fruits of true repentance for their sins. He ordered all the others standing by, the Egyptians, to go out of the hall, so that no man remained with him except his brothers when he made himself known to them. Alone with them he revealed himself, weeping aloud in connection with making himself known.

His brothers stood dumb with fear and amazement, remembering their cruelty toward him and fearing that he would take revenge. That self-revelation began their reconciliation. That private disclosure led them to humbly confess the wrongs they had committed against him and to entreat his forgiveness. They rejoiced greatly to find him alive after long remorse and great distress of mind since their cruelty, and their troubled minds were relieved to know they were not guilty of his blood.
