Genesis 46:2

And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I.

The word came at Beersheba while Jacob was on his way toward Egypt to move his family there, his heart glad after he had forgiven his sons for their wicked treatment of Joseph. At Beersheba he halted to offer grateful sacrifices and to entreat God for blessing and to make known whether the move to Egypt was pleasing to Him, wanting evidence that God would go with them. God answered in the visions of the night by calling Jacob twice by his personal name.

In speaking, God identified Himself as God, the God of Jacob's father. Jacob answered by presenting himself in readiness. The night speech assured him not to fear going down into Egypt, for God would there make a great nation of him.

God promised to go down with Jacob into Egypt and to surely bring him up again. God promised that Joseph would be with Jacob at his death, putting his hand upon his eyes.
