Genesis 46:32
And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have. And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have.
Joseph counseled five of his brothers to tell Pharaoh frankly and openly that their trade was shepherding, keepers of cattle. He gave this direction deliberately so they would not be drawn into the king's special service and exposed to its temptations amid the corrupting and idolatrous influences of the Egyptian court. Since the occupation of a shepherd was regarded in Egypt as degrading, Pharaoh would not for Joseph's sake seek to exalt them to some honorable position. Because the brothers obeyed this counsel, Pharaoh permitted Joseph to settle his father and his brothers in the best part of Egypt.
Joseph selected for them Goshen, a well-watered and fertile country that afforded good pasture for their flocks and herds and all that they had brought with them. There they could also worship God undisturbed by the ceremonies of Egyptian idolatrous service. Israel dwelt there until God brought His people out of Egypt with power and mighty signs and wonders.
