And Jacob rose up from Beer-sheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. Genesis 46:5 belongs to the time of the famine foretold by Joseph. By then that famine had spread beyond Egypt into Canaan and was pressing severely on the district where Jacob lived. Hearing of abundant provision made by the king of Egypt, ten of Jacob's sons had journeyed to Egypt to buy grain.
