Genesis 47:11
And Joseph placed his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded. And Joseph placed his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
Joseph placed his father and his brothers in the best part of Egypt, the land of Rameses, also called Goshen, and gave them a possession there by Pharaoh's command and with his permission. Before that grant he presented five of his brothers to Pharaoh, after counseling them to answer frankly that they were shepherds. He counseled this frank avowal because shepherding was regarded as degrading in Egypt, so that Pharaoh would not exalt them to honorable positions in the king's special service where they would be exposed to temptation amid corrupting, idolatrous influences at court.
Pharaoh granted the land in recognition of Joseph's service to the kingdom, valuing his wisdom and especially his preparation for the famine, and thus rewarded his family. They were settled as free holders and not as slaves, with land granted for their families and households and for their livestock, and they were not required to pay tax. Joseph also supplied his family with food, generously and according to their families.
Joseph selected Goshen because it was a well-watered, fertile country affording good pasture for flocks, and because its distance from Egyptian idolatrous ceremonies and worship allowed them to worship God undisturbed and without disturbance. They continued to inhabit Goshen and the country round about it until God brought His people out of Egypt with power and mighty signs and wonders.
