Genesis 47:13
And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine. And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine.
The famine left no bread in all the land, and it was very grievous, so that Egypt and the land of Canaan alike fainted and suffered greatly for lack of food. Its severity reached even to Canaan, bringing deep distress upon the country where Jacob lived.
Jacob's household felt that distress in Canaan and was brought into need of grain, and this need is the reason his family was given both land to dwell in and food to live on in Egypt. Egypt itself had food to give out because of the stores Joseph had laid up, and from that store a generous supply was appointed for his own family while the peoples of other lands around were perishing. His wise handling of those provisions not only fed the hungry but also greatly enriched the kingdom. Yet while many Egyptians were driven by hunger to sell their property and even themselves to Pharaoh in exchange for food, the Israelites neither sold their property nor sold themselves.
