Genesis 47:15
And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for the money faileth. And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for the money faileth.
The famine was severe in both Egypt and Canaan, with Egypt holding stored food while Canaan and other lands were perishing around it. Money was exhausted and failed, leaving the people without means to obtain food. All the Egyptians came to Joseph for bread and depended on him for food, pleading that they would die in his presence without it.
This provision was possible because Joseph's wise management had enriched the kingdom and secured an abundant food supply. In contrast to many Egyptians who sold their cattle, lands, and themselves for food, the Israelites had been given land because of Joseph's service and were supplied with food. Joseph supplied his father and brothers generously without requiring them to pay tax.
