Genesis 47:17
And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year. And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year.
This verse belongs to the account of Joseph distributing food during the famine. In that famine the Egyptians brought their horses and flocks and cattle of the herds and asses to Joseph in exchange for bread, and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year. By contrast the Israelites had not sold their cattle or their land or themselves for food, but lived on land granted to them in Egypt and kept their flocks and cattle. In this setting Joseph's father and brothers were exempt from tax and were allowed to receive food liberally.
