And Pharaoh spake unto Joseph, saying, Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee:
The words are Pharaoh's welcome to Joseph, telling him that his father Jacob and his brothers have come to him and authorizing him to settle them in Egypt. In this encounter Joseph first brought five of his brothers before Pharaoh to obtain a grant of land for their future home. He had counseled them to state plainly and frankly that they were shepherds, an occupation regarded in Egypt as degrading, so that Pharaoh would not exalt them to honorable position in his special court service amid its corrupting idolatrous influences.
Upon their testimony Pharaoh gave Joseph permission to settle his father and his brothers in the best part of the land of Egypt. Joseph selected Goshen for them, and Pharaoh granted them a home there, as the best of the land. Goshen was a well-watered, fertile country affording good pasture and water for their flocks, where they could also worship God undisturbed by and without interference from the ceremonies of Egyptian idolatrous service. The Israelites inhabited the country round about Goshen until God brought His people out of Egypt with power and mighty signs and wonders.
