Genesis 48:7

And as for me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when yet there was but a little way to come unto Ephrath: and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath; the same is Beth-lehem.

These words belong long afterward in Egypt, when Jacob lay near death and Joseph came to visit him, and the aged patriarch glanced back upon his own life. They reveal a deep and abiding love for Rachel, for whose sake he had served twice seven years, with toil made light by love. She had died by him on the way from Bethel toward Hebron, when only a two days' journey remained, and her death brought him heavy grief. In the family history of his long and troubled life, her loss alone was recalled here.
