Genesis 49:18

I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD.

The verse belongs to Jacob's dying inspired testimony to his children, uttered in his last hours. It was spoken to his sorrowing sons when angels surrounded him and the power of God's grace shone upon him. The words did not spring from mere natural paternal affection, nor from an unforgiving or resentful spirit, for he had forgiven his sons and loved them to the last. God by the spirit of prophecy lifted his mind above his natural feelings, which would have uttered only love and tenderness, so that under inspiration he declared prophetic truth even when it was painful. Unlike his gloomy exposure of Simeon and Levi's deeds of violence and his declaration that God would visit them for their sins, his prophetic words to his other sons were not as gloomy.

The verse expresses patient waiting for the Lord's salvation. Trust in God's goodness and compassion calls for patience while awaiting His saving help. In times of financial hardship and uncertainty it calls for resting in peace and waiting for God's help rather than fretting.
