Genesis 49:19

Gad, a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last.

This word concerning Gad belongs to Jacob's dying testimony to his children, spoken as inspired prophetic words to his sons in his last hours. At that time his mind was lifted above natural feeling, with angels around him and the power of God's grace shining upon him. He did not speak from an unforgiving spirit over past wrongs, but from a heart that had forgiven his children and loved them to the last. The utterance was not mere paternal love and tenderness, which would have spoken only affection, but painful truth given by the Spirit of prophecy. Its message is not as gloomy as the rebuke given to Simeon and Levi for their deeds of violence and for the punishment God would bring for their sins.
