Genesis 49:25
Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb: Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb:
The verse belongs to Jacob's final prophetic blessings, spoken by the dying patriarch under the Spirit of inspiration to his best-loved son Joseph, foretelling the future of his descendants tribe by tribe, in which Joseph received the double portion of the inheritance. Those last words expressed prophetic truth rather than resentment over wrongs, for although Jacob loved and forgave his sons, God's prophetic Spirit lifted him above his natural feelings, so his words could include truths that were painful to hear. It was part of his prediction of a cheerful future for most of his sons, spoken with special eloquence and happy character over Joseph.
The meaning is that help comes from the God of his father and blessing comes from the Almighty, with abundance from heaven above, from the deep that lies below, and of fertility and family increase pictured by the breasts and the womb. It sets forth the secret of Joseph's life and greatness, that this help and blessing came through loyalty to God and faith in the Unseen, which was his anchor and the hiding of his power, so that his strength was made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob. Together with the surrounding words, the blessing declares that God's favor would rest on Joseph.
Applied to Israel, the verse shows God's purpose and the glorious possibilities before His people, for God planted Israel as a goodly vine by the wells of life beside life-giving waters, placed His people within the circle of His special care and blessing, and gave them the possibility of becoming a fruitful bough that would be fruitful and glorify God. The people in Christ's day failed to display the good character God intended and hindered the blessings meant for the world.
