Genesis 49:28
All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them. All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them.
The verse records Jacob's dying blessing upon his sons as the twelve tribes of Israel, with every one blessed according to his own blessing. He spoke as an affectionate father who had forgiven his sons for their wrongs, who loved them to the last, who mourned Joseph and grieved over Simeon, and who held no resentful or unforgiving feeling toward them. Left to his own natural paternal feeling he would have uttered only love and tenderness, so the painful truths in his testimony did not come from personal resentment. God by the spirit of prophecy elevated his mind above natural feeling, angels were all around him in his last hours and the power of God's grace shone upon him, so that under inspiration he uttered truth even though it was painful.
His words were words of inspiration that set forth the light in which God viewed their deeds, especially deeds of violence, declaring that God would visit them for their sins. The blessings were prophetic, with the words to the guilty sons gloomy in rebuke and warning of punishment, while the prophetic words to his other sons were not as gloomy.
