Animals Climb the Ramp into Noah's ArkBible World

Genesis 7:8

Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,

The verse names the living creatures gathered into the ark as clean animals, unclean animals, birds, and everything that creeps upon the earth. The clean beasts and clean birds came by sevens, while the rest came in pairs, male and female, in the movement remembered as coming two by two. They came of their own accord with no visible leader, guided by an unseen divine hand as angels led them from every quarter. They entered in perfect peaceful order and were housed in the places prepared for them, and by obeying God they found refuge while giving the world an unmistakable sign of His power and a witness that the ark was His work for human salvation. Their entrance closed the time of mercy and distinguished the obedient from the disobedient, prefiguring the last days when sudden destruction will again overtake the unprepared while God preserves and hides those who are ready.

Animals Entering the Ark

The verse lists four classes coming to the ark: clean beasts, beasts that are not clean, fowls or birds, and everything that creeps upon the earth. Both clean and unclean land animals were included, with clean and unclean beasts and birds and creeping things all moving toward Noah's ark.

The clean beasts and clean birds entered by sevens, while the rest entered in pairs, male and female. That pairing is often summed up as coming two by two, with cattle and every other living creature and dumb animals quietly coming of themselves two and two to be housed inside.

They came of their own accord without a visible leader, led by an invisible divine hand and under the invisible leadership of God. Angels led them, bringing them from mountain and forest and from field and forest and from every quarter. From the forest and from every quarter they came, with animals coming from the forest by the guidance of a divine hand.

They entered in perfect, peaceful order, the fiercest with the gentlest together, passing into the ark two by two in perfect order. The birds came in such numbers that they filled the heavens and darkened them, flocking together like a dark cloud as they flew toward the ark. Their coming continued for seven days while Noah arranged them and housed them in the places prepared for them inside the ark that stood on dry land. When the ark was finished and stocked they were housed inside, with Noah arranging them in the places prepared.

By entering, the beasts and fowls obeyed God while man was disobedient, and by that obedience they found a place of refuge. Their coming was a solemn scene and a signal, solemn, wonderful, unmistakable manifestation and sign of God's power and extraordinary sign of His power. It was unmistakable evidence that the building of the ark was the work of God, given as a wonderful sight and witness to the world without for human salvation.

Flood Judgment and Last Days

Genesis 7:8 stands in the record that human wickedness was great in the earth, that every imagination of the thoughts of the heart was only evil continually, and that the earth was corrupt before God and filled with violence through continual transgression of His law. The divine judgments of the Flood followed those growing sins and moral corruption, belonging to God's vindication of His authority by water. God beholds all the works of men, bears long with sin, and sets limits to forbearance, and when the measure of iniquity was full He swept that wicked race away, showing Himself avenger to the wicked and protector of the righteous. Noah and his family were preserved by miracle because they did what was right, and Noah carried God's law forward to his descendants, while those outside perished because they would not believe.

For 120 years Noah proclaimed the warning that a flood would come, preaching righteousness while building an immense boat on dry land as shelter where the obedient could find refuge until the indignation was overpast. Methuselah and his descendants received instruction from Noah and helped build, with employed carpenters and converts assisting, though some who believed for a time died beforehand and others backslid, and many who helped did not believe, did not cleanse themselves from wrong principles, and did not overcome temptation to do and say things contrary to God's mind and will. Most hearers claimed to know more than God's servant, closed their ears, explained truth away by false science, called Noah a fanatic, and laughed at rain as foolishness and parable because rain had never fallen and the earth had been watered by mist. Noah with those who kept the faith preached all the more earnestly in proportion to the universal scorn heaped on God's law and on the ark-builders, refusing to lose reverence and love for the law, bearing God's message to an impenitent, pleasure-loving, corrupt people so all had sufficient light to accept saving truth, obey all His commandments, and be saved.

Only eight persons lived to enter and were saved, Noah with his wife and his sons and his sons' wives, while the vast rebellious population that would not keep the commandments of heaven was swept away and death was their portion, fulfilling the warning that they should drink the waters of the flood. All were tested by the truth Noah preached, and those who believed were saved, showing the truth of God's word and that the majority do not follow Christ. Believers must not follow the majority or turn to fables but be found on the side of the loyal and true. Their rejection did not make the message of none effect, for none but Noah and his family were saved in the ark, which condemned the world.

Noah and his family went in because of the waters of the flood, and God with an invisible hand, through His angel, shut them in. Then they remained enclosed a full week with no rain and clear daily sun, a severe trial of faith while the enemy suggested doubts. The apparent delay confirmed the wicked in calling the message a delusion, and notwithstanding the miracle seen they continued in sport and revelry, made a jest of it, gathered in crowds about the ark, laughed at Noah for shutting himself in, and derided its inmates with scoffing, jesting, and a daring violence never ventured before. In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, on the seventeenth day of the second month, the fountains of the great deep were broken up, previously unseen clouds gathered thicker and thicker until rain fell gently as a new thing and then in torrents as if the windows of heaven had been opened for forty days and forty nights. The waters prevailed one hundred fifty days and rose higher and higher day by day, morning and evening, until every living being and animal outside the ark perished while the ark floated safely upon the troubled waters and the people looked at one another in despair.

The entry marks the close of merciful probation when the obedient were distinguished from the disobedient by the standard of God's law made known to that world. Persistent willful transgression after warning exceeds the limits of grace, requiring God to interfere in wrath to vindicate the honor of His law and repress unrighteousness, while fulfilling His word to exhibit His power against the impenitent, disobedient world. God blotted out the wicked as an act of mercy, declaring His verdict that the wicked are incurable and will not submit to His authority, yet protecting the righteous who did right. As those who knew not until the flood took them away, so shall the coming of the Son of man be, for the inspired Genesis history is literal history, not fable, and prefigures human character and events before Christ's return. The same unbelief, pleasure-seeking, hardening, search for natural causes, cry of peace and safety, and increasing wickedness, calamities, earthquakes, floods and disasters prevail, and the wickedness repeated in this age will bring sudden destruction on the unprepared as a thief.

The invitation to enter and be ready, Come for all things are now ready, went forth to all who would with hope for every inhabitant before the door was closed, and is now given before the last message of warning is given and cases are fixed holy or filthy. It now requires preparation, diligent heart-searching, conversion and pardon of sins for the closing scenes of this earth's history. As Noah was preserved and the ark rode safely preserving the faithful while mockers were drowned, God cares for His people, will be the refuge hiding believers so no evil or plague comes near, and will gloriously deliver those who have faithfully warned of coming wrath and will not bow to the decree of the beast or receive his mark, though Satan and his host would slay them.
