Noah and His Family Leave the Ark Under the Rainbowby KandD

Genesis 8:16

Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

Genesis 8:16 is God's command for Noah and his wife and his sons and his sons' wives to go forth out of the ark after the flood. The family anxiously watched the waters decrease and longed to return to earth, yet remained shut up inside until God gave the word to leave, after the sending of the raven and the dove that returned with the olive leaf. The door had been shut by God Himself, and He sent an angel who descended to open it. Noah himself could not open that door from within, though he was able to remove the covering from the top of the ark. At that bidding the eight persons came out after their long confinement, bringing every living thing out with them.

The ark was a massive boat provided by God to save all who would heed the warning and turn from unrighteousness. The world was destroyed by the flood because of its iniquity and disobedience to God's commandments, thus fulfilling God's warning; all had been tested by the truth Noah preached, and only those who believed were saved, so that only eight persons entered the ark and were saved.

The account belongs to the inspired history of Genesis, with Noah as a real person and the flood as a historical event. The generation of Noah's day prefigures the world as it will be before Christ appears in the clouds of heaven.
