Noah Receives the Dove With an Olive LeafBible World
8:7Genesis 8:7
And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth.
The verse belongs to the inspired Genesis account of Noah and the flood, affirmed as literal history. The flood destroyed the world as a divine judgment because of its sin and iniquity. God used the massive ark to save all who would heed the warning, turn from unrighteousness, and believe the truth Noah preached, yet only eight persons were saved.
The sending took place forty days after the tops of the mountains became visible. Noah and his family were anxiously watching and waiting for the waters to decrease because they longed to go forth upon the earth again. Noah sent the raven to learn the condition of the waters, whether the earth had become dry and ready for them to leave.
The raven was a bird of quick scent. Finding nothing but water, the raven flew back and forth to and from the ark without bringing the information Noah wanted, continuing until the waters were dried from the earth. After the raven failed to bring the desired information, Noah sent forth a dove.
Christ treats Noah and the flood as factual and as a pattern for the character of the world before His return. The flood warns that growing wickedness will likewise face certain punishment.
