Habakkuk 2:19

Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.

Habakkuk 2:19 stands within the prophecy of Habakkuk 2:3-20, which gives only a faint outline of the reality of the near end. That prophecy foretells scenes of destruction and desolation that will soon come and be universal in the last day, including God's judgments upon cities. It points to the time when Satan is every year drilling his army to develop strong parties ready for the great battle of the last great conflict, when evil shall break forth.

What is described there will be witnessed just as clearly as described and as surely fulfilled as the desolation of San Francisco was seen. Therefore everyone must be also ready, because the Son of man comes in such an hour as is not thought. Meeting that living reality requires wisdom in dividing and subdividing the work under selected caretakers, and in clearing the King's highway when men in high places supposing themselves wise block the way.
