Habakkuk 2:5
Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people: Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:
The verse portrays a proud and restless ruler whose desire is insatiable, like the grave and like death never satisfied but gathering to himself all nations and heaping to himself all peoples. It belongs to the larger prophecy of Habakkuk 2:3-20, which is the Lord's word for the last day. It is included among Old Testament prophecies that apply to the last days and are certain to be fulfilled, without any more specific last-day application being given.
It clearly describes scenes of destruction and desolation that will soon come and be universal and will soon be witnessed just as described, as surely as the desolation of San Francisco has been seen. It gives only a faint description of the reality of the near end, when every year Satan trains his army to develop strong parties ready for the great battle of the last great conflict. It raises the question of who is wise in the time when evil springs forth. It therefore calls everyone to be ready, because the Son of man comes in an hour that is not expected.
