Haggai 2:16
Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty. Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty.
The verse records a severe shortfall in grain and wine, in which a heap expected to yield twenty measures yielded only ten, and a press expected to draw fifty vessels yielded only twenty, half or less. This lack belonged to the time before stone was laid upon stone in the temple, before its foundation was laid, during the drought that followed neglect of the temple. The shortfall was the Lord's own diminishing and smiting of the labor of their hands with blasting and mildew and hail as judgment on their work.
It came because the people were unclean before Him in every work of their hands, had left His house in ruins while caring for their own homes, and neglected His claims. Even under that loss they did not turn to Him, and the loss unveils the heart and shows that He takes cognizance of all human works and can diminish or increase and bless. They are called to consider this former lack in contrast with His promise from the day the foundation was laid to bless them even while seed is still in the barn and vine, fig tree, pomegranate and olive have not yet brought forth.
