Haggai 2:17
I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD. I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD.
The smiting came before the foundation of the temple was laid, at a time when rebuilding was neglected while each pursued his own interests. The people and the nation stood unclean before the Lord, so that every work of their hands and everything they offered was unclean. The Lord takes account of all human works and lays bare the heart.
He struck the crops and all the labors of their hands with blasting and mildew and hail, cutting the yield short so that a heap looked for to give twenty measures gave only ten, and a press looked for to give fifty vessels gave only twenty, bringing shortage and hardship. He has power both to diminish and to increase and to bless. The losses warned that withholding support from His work brings hardship, yet affliction by itself does not produce repentance. Despite these judgments the people still did not turn to Him.
