Haggai 2:22

And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.

The promise was spoken to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, on the day blessings were promised to Israel in response to faithful and willing obedience. It foretells that God will overthrow the rule and military strength of the heathen kingdoms. Throne means strength, and that strength will be destroyed, with chariots overthrown and those who ride in them brought down. Horses and their riders shall come down, every one falling by the sword of his brother, so that their own soldiers destroy one another in mutual combat. This overthrow shows that Satan is not all-powerful, for it is the destruction of Satan's power. That power must be removed before Christ's power can be fully established.

The overthrow of earthly thrones and strength is to be recognized in the present day as God's kingdom extends throughout the earth. As it extends it shakes the power of every nation. By this shaking the attention of every person is turned to the Word of the living God. Each one is thereby given opportunity to hear the third angel's message.
