Hebrews 1:8

But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

The Father speaks directly to the Son as a distinct person from Himself, addressing Him as God. His throne and kingdom are declared to last forever and ever without end, and the ruling authority of that kingdom is righteousness itself. He is set far above the angels as their rightful Ruler, being equal and one with the eternal Father in nature, character and purpose, and anointed as King above His fellows because He loves righteousness and hates iniquity. This exalted One came into the world in human flesh to establish the kingdom of heaven among men, giving Himself as a sacrifice for sin and overcoming Satan and temptation by perfect obedience and the Word of God, so that He stands as the only competent Saviour with all power in heaven and earth. As the divine eternal King and Life-giver He is to be worshiped, His testimony in the opening of Hebrews is to be studied until the receiver gains the mind of Christ, and His absolute ownership of all things makes earthly wealth a trust to be used faithfully rather than hoarded in greed.

Father Speaks to Son

The verse is the Father speaking directly to the Son, showing that the Father and the Son are distinct individual personalities.
It belongs to the passage Hebrews 1:3-14 presenting the Father and the Son, where its throne and sceptre are not further explained.

In speaking, the Father addresses the Son as God.
This address to His anointed Son is weighty with meaning.
It declares that His throne and kingdom endure forever and ever and will never end.
The same everlasting throne is declared to last forever and ever.

It declares that the sceptre of His kingdom is righteousness, so His rule and royal authority are defined by righteousness and right doing.
His royal authority is defined by right doing.

It presents Him as the rightful Ruler holding supremacy over all angels.
He is set far above the angels who are made spirits and ministers of fire.

Eternal King and Saviour

The Son addressed is equal with God, one with the eternal Father in nature and character and purpose. He is God's anointed, the anointed King set on Zion. He loves righteousness and hates iniquity, and is anointed with the oil of gladness above His fellows.

His glorious high throne existing from the beginning is the place of His sanctuary. Honor and majesty are before Him and strength and beauty are within, with mercy and truth going before His face. The address proves He possesses divine wisdom, ability and power, with all power in heaven and in earth given to Him. His government and peace have no end, and He stands before the world as wonderful Counsellor, the mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace, the only competent Saviour who overcame Satan in behalf of humanity.

In and through the incarnate Son the Father establishes the kingdom of heaven among men. This exalted One came to this world and gave Himself as a sacrifice for sin and died so that humans would not eternally perish, becoming poor so that through His poverty humans might be made rich. He came to roll back the sweeping tide of evil, practicing piety, self-denial and self-sacrifice as an example to follow, declaring the law binding and honoring it by perfect obedience. Fully able for the work laid upon Him, He met and overcame in the wilderness the strongest temptations the enemy could bring by appeal to the written Word, proving the power of the Word of God. His righteous reign was seen when He went about Galilee teaching, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and disease.

Worship and Faithful Stewardship

As the divine eternal King He is to be worshiped as the Life-giver. In and through the incarnate Son the Father establishes the kingdom of heaven among men. He is set far above the angels, who are made spirits and ministers of fire, and is to be worshiped as the center of attraction because He first loved us. The Father speaking to the Son and calling Him God shows a throne lasting forever and ever whose rule is righteousness.

The verse holds out eternal realities that require a mind purified from sin and the allurements of the world. Windows are to be closed earthward and opened heavenward to let in the glory shining across the heavenly threshold. It is God the Father's words concerning His anointed Son and is weighty with meaning, calling the Son God, declaring His throne forever and ever, and declaring the scepter of His kingdom a scepter of righteousness. It proves He possesses divine wisdom, ability and power, making Him the only competent Saviour who overcame Satan on behalf of humanity and who stands before the world as wonderful Counsellor, the mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.

It is part of the Holy Spirit's testimony in behalf of righteousness and truth. Studying the opening chapters of Hebrews gives the receiver the mind of Christ and makes him a faithful worker for his Lord. Created things such as leaves and flowers are not God. They are object lessons that represent God's power and point to His power to save.

Christ possesses absolute right to all things, and His kingdom is ruled by righteousness. The wealth and reputation of the richest people are small beside His riches. Earthly wealth belongs to God and is entrusted to people for a time as a test of character. Those who misuse that trust through greed and covetousness are unfaithful stewards and must answer for it. They cannot belong to His royal family.
