High Priest Before the Ark in the Most Holy PlaceBible World

Hebrews 10:16

This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

The Holy Spirit witnesses to the covenant God makes after those days on the ground of Christ's one offering, by which He perfected forever those who are sanctified and secured forgiveness so that sins are remembered no more and no further offering for sin is needed. In this covenant God puts His laws into hearts and writes them in minds, so that obedience springs from within rather than from mere outward compliance and makes joyful submission possible without bondage. To have the law thus written in the mind is to be sealed in the forehead, where the forehead stands for the intellect and the heart for the affections and disposition. The laws promised are the enduring principles of righteousness embodied in the Ten Commandments, not annulled or changed, which those united to Christ by faith establish and exalt, including the Sabbath as God's sign and seal of His authority as Creator placed in the mind. When people are renewed in His likeness and emptied of self, this inwardly written law shapes temper, habits, and character into loving service and allegiance, cleansing away selfishness and impurity and making their lives a living testimony entrusted to them to carry to the world.

Covenant Witness and Setting

The Holy Spirit Himself bears witness to the covenant God makes after those days, to put His laws into hearts and write them in minds. That witness rests on Christ's one offering, by which He has perfected forever those who are sanctified. After that one offering for sins forever He sat down on the right hand of God, from henceforth expecting till His enemies be made His footstool. With that finished work comes complete forgiveness, so that sins and iniquities are remembered no more and there is no more offering for sin.

Because Christ stands in the presence of God as High Priest over the house of God in the true tabernacle not made with hands, those in covenant with Him as His household can enter with Him. They are to draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience. They are to hold fast the profession of faith without wavering, for He is faithful who promised.

To have the law written in the mind is to be marked or sealed in the forehead. The forehead stands for the intellect, while the heart stands for the affections or disposition.

That finished priestly work will be declared at His return in glorified humanity. Having offered Himself as a sacrifice, He took the blood of His own atonement into the holiest of all and sprinkled it upon the mercy seat and upon His own garments and blessed the people. That same humanity once veiled in sorrow and grief on earth descends from heaven robed in glory, triumphant and exalted, and in His priestly character He appears the second time to declare that there is to be no more sacrifice for sin.

Inward Law and Doctrine

The covenant is that God puts His laws into hearts and writes them in minds, so that obedience is inward rather than merely outward compliance. That inward writing engraves His precepts on the heart and His principles on mind and soul in those converted to Him, making joyful submission to God possible without bondage.

Under the new covenant the law is written in heart and mind when persons are renewed in His likeness and His love is implanted in them, shaping the life so that obedience becomes loving service and allegiance by faith in Christ. Through the Spirit's work the truth as it is in Jesus changes character and habits, turning sinners into God's children, changing temper and habits from within. The Word then does not remain a passing or superficial impression, but leads to receiving Christ, turning from self and sin, and living by God's principles. This inward change is joined to forgiveness, so that sins and iniquities are remembered no more and no further offering for sin is needed, and those changed and forgiven may draw near with assurance and hold fast their faith.

Through Christ's atonement and true conversion the law shapes the whole person and character, so that self is no longer exalted and the soul is ready to choose what sanctified judgment approves. When its holy precepts are written in the heart, truth is brought into the inner sanctuary of the soul, producing a holy life and godly conduct and bringing every thought into subjection to Christ. The laws so promised are the enduring principles of righteousness embodied in the Ten Commandments, not annulled or changed, to be obeyed in restored Paradise. The ceremonial system of types pointing to Christ as the Lamb who takes away sin passed away at His death, but God's law of love remains unchanged.

Those who receive Christ as personal Saviour become partakers of His divine nature, one with Him and in perfect harmony with heaven's law, and by faith establish and exalt the law instead of making it void. That obedience includes keeping the Sabbath made for the round world, observed according to sun-rising and sun-setting and honoring God as Creator. Having the law written in the mind is being marked or sealed in the forehead, where the forehead represents the intellect and the heart represents the affections or disposition. In that sense the Sabbath is His sign and seal of His law placed in the mind as a token of His authority and power as Creator.

The promise joins justification, sanctification, and redemption, and takes effect when a person awakes to individual responsibility, takes himself in hand, is converted and emptied of self, and cooperates with God. Then God does His part and Christ takes possession, forming a vessel unto honor to do God's works, calling Seventh-day Adventists to a new conversion. The inward law is the great law of love revealed in Eden and proclaimed at Sinai, binding to God's high, noble, and elevating will and calling to lifelong service as Christ's co-workers. This is seen in Christ, who delighted to do God's will and had the law within His heart, while following one's own inclinations leads toward Satan's character.

Covenant Life and Mission

The promise to put the laws into the mind and write them in the heart cleanses commandment-keeping people from selfishness, covetousness, ambitious pride, pretense, fraud, bribery, and every underhand dealing to gain advantage over others. In their place come high-souled integrity and heavenly principles that are single-eyed to the glory of God. Sin is cleansed from the soul temple and human character is molded after the similitude of God into conformity to the image of His Son as a pure and holy people. Those who have the law thus written in hearts and lives lay aside their own will to do God's will. Their lives become a living and visible testimony that God's law is within them and still governs even when evil is widespread.

The inward writing makes those who receive it the depositaries and keepers of the law, entrusted with it as inwardly known and held truth. This honor places on Sabbath-keeping Adventists and all who receive it the responsibility to carry its vital truths and warning message to those who have not heard. Those truths are of vital importance because they are to test the world.

The covenant witnessed by the Holy Spirit joins consecrated obedience from within with full remembrance of sins and iniquities no more on the ground of the one offering by which those sanctified are perfected forever. Because Christ stands as High Priest over the house of God in the true tabernacle not made with hands, those in covenant as His household draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith with hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, hold fast the profession of faith without wavering because He is faithful, consider one another to provoke to love and good works, and do not forsake assembling together as the day approaches. This means unity in self-denying service that lays down life for the brethren as shown in Gethsemane instead of commanding, striving, and working at cross purposes. It gives spiritual life for a sound Christian experience through daily conversion to simple obedience in a consecrated life spent seeking to save perishing souls in dependence on the Lord and not on human agencies, growing in grace.

God desires people to receive all that has been provided at immense cost and to be doers of the Word in partnership with Christ. Great truths presented do not accomplish more because they are not lived and so remain powerless to influence, and what is needed is a deeper appreciation of truth. The time has now come for self to stop wrestling for supremacy and for the Lord's law to be put inside the heart and shown in the life. Having the law written in the heart means having the mind of Christ and bringing the life into harmony with Him by cultivating hope, love, and brotherly kindness with every effort possible.
