Believers Gather Hand in Hand by a Lampby emmanuel_higgins

Hebrews 10:23

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; ( for he is faithful that promised;)

Let us hold fast the profession of faith without wavering because He who promised is faithful. Holding fast means keeping hold on Jesus, keeping the will on God's side, and keeping firm trust in what He promised without letting appearances cause faith to stagger. This confidence rests on His one sacrifice for sin, His blood that opens the new and living way into the holiest, and His service as High Priest and Advocate over the house of God who intercedes for believers. God is faithful to fulfill what He promised, His Word never fails, His promises are sure and can bear the whole weight of trust, and His purpose will be fulfilled when believers do their part. That steadfast faith holds on in prayer without distrust when the answer is delayed, trusts pardon without wavering after confession, and endures trial to the end while provoking one another to love and good works.

Meaning and Immediate Context

The call is to hold fast the profession or confession of faith without wavering, because he who promised is faithful. It is an appeal to remain firm and unwavering in confessed faith, grounded in the faithfulness of God to fulfill what he has promised. That steadfastness belongs with drawing near to God in full assurance through Jesus' blood and continuing to encourage one another in love and good works as the approaching day draws near. It is also applied as an appeal to rest the soul on the Lord and trust his care.

Holding fast means keeping hold on the Lord Jesus rather than losing hold to command instead of serve. It means keeping the will on God's side when temptation taxes willpower to the uttermost and exercising faith seems contrary to sense and emotion, believing that in Jesus Christ is everlasting strength and efficiency, having the faith which works by love and purifies the soul, and hour by hour holding a triumphant position in God strong in his strength. It means keeping firm trust in what God has promised without wavering, taking God at his word that he will do what he has promised, letting no appearance cause faith to stagger and letting nothing disturb confidence even when faith is tested, including believing his word for healing in answer to earnest prayer and trusting that restoration to health will glorify him.

The reason given for this firmness is that Jesus offered one sacrifice for sins, opened access to God through his blood, and serves as high priest. With Christ having given himself and now standing in the presence of God as High Priest and Advocate over the house of God, believers may through him and with him enter the true tabernacle not made with hands, drawing near with a true heart in full assurance of faith. They have boldness to enter the holiest by the blood of Jesus by the new and living way consecrated through the veil, that is his flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God they draw near with hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and bodies washed with pure water. His offering brings forgiveness and sanctification, and he intercedes for believers.

Those called to hold fast are those who have repented of sin and been washed, sanctified and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of God. They have entered the covenant in which God puts his laws into hearts and minds and remembers sins and iniquities no more, and writes his law in the heart. Having a High Priest over the house of God, they draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and bodies washed. The verse stands joined to considering one another to provoke to love and to good works, not forsaking assembling together but exhorting one another as the day approaches. Provoking one another in this way toward love and good works, which grow from unselfish love, compassion and tender interest and bear fruit to God's glory, is right, unlike provoking one another to anger.

Holding fast in this setting means deciding between the false and the true, living and speaking and acting as children of light and representatives of Christ. It means wearing no yoke of bondage but only Christ's yoke of keeping the Father's commandments. It gives spiritual life to the soul for a sound Christian experience and growth in grace. That life requires daily conversion to simple obedience and a consecrated life spent seeking to save perishing souls in dependence on the Lord rather than on human agencies, remembering Gethsemane where Christ passed his last terrible trial so believers might not perish but have eternal life, and therefore laying down life for the brethren in unity, brotherly love and good works.

Why Believers Can Hold Fast

The reason for holding fast without wavering is that God is faithful to fulfill what He has promised, His Word never fails, and His promises are sure and able to bear the whole weight of trust placed upon them. His purpose for believers will be fulfilled when they do their part. Some of His promises are conditional, so that when people comply with the stated conditions and obey His requirements none of His promises will fail.

His promises are Yes and Amen in Christ Jesus, and that faithfulness guarantees help in temptation. Means are provided by which temptation may be resisted and overcome, He knows how to deliver godly people out of temptation, and He effectually restrains the power of the enemy even when it comes through human agencies, so that no obedient soul who seeks His help will seek in vain. Dependence is not in what man can do but in what God can do through Christ. When wholly surrendered to God in full belief, the blood of Christ perfectly forgives sin and cleanses from all sin, frees the conscience from condemnation, makes perfect, gives claimed sanctification with the favor of God and acceptance in the Beloved, and Christ accepts the surrender of the repenting believing soul to mold and fashion it after His own likeness.

Jesus is united to His people by a love greater and more enduring than human kinship and family ties, and that deep unchanging love is a continual guarantee and assurance that He will stay faithful. That guarantee was proved when to secure them and ensure eternal salvation He gave up honor, glory, throne, court, riches and His own life, becoming poor so that through His poverty they might be made rich. He endured the agony of Gethsemane where He prayed three times for the cup to pass yet yielded to God's will and was strengthened by an angel, then walked the bloodstained path to Calvary and drank suffering to the dregs so that His revealed love would move sinners from transgression and draw men from sin.

Because people cost so much He will not leave them now, but His arms stay outstretched to clasp repentant believing ones to His heart with divine tenderness and affection. He remains an enduring unchanging Friend when all worldly prospects fail and every earthly friend proves unfaithful and treacherous. He holds His servants as dear as the apple of the eye, is present at every step in trial, want, perplexity and distress bidding them follow Him, with the pledge never to leave nor forsake them. This blessed assurance is given only on condition of obedience and faithfulness to Him. Because believers were bought at the infinite price of the Son of God they must deal tenderly, patiently, kindly and affectionately with one another, lifting the desponding and discouraged and those with unbelief at home rather than hurting the purchase of His blood.

Trusting God in Prayer

Unwavering faith in prayer rests on the faithfulness of the one who promised to fulfill what he has pledged, so sincere supplications are to be trusted as heard and not lost, answered prayer is to be met with rejoicing and praise, and life is to be brought into harmony with what is asked. When the answer does not come at once, distrust must not be allowed to take hold because it separates from God, and wavering faith receives nothing. Confidence is instead to remain strong, holding fast to the promise even in prayer for the Holy Spirit and blessing, because the blessing comes when it is most needed.

A sincere prayer offered in faith is heard and answered with what is good, though that blessing may differ from what was requested, exceed expectations, and come later. That later help may arrive unexpectedly, including strength to present the truth to unbelievers clearly and powerfully. The assurance is broad, yet it does not mean every prayer will be answered at the requested time or in the exact way desired. God hears and answers in love, sometimes giving what is best rather than what was asked because human understanding is limited, and to expect a particular request exactly as desired is presumption.

Delay is given so that holy boldness will hold fast in claiming what God has promised. God does not grant every request, for he sees when a desired thing would harm the soul and instead gives what is for the person's good and for his glory, and rebellion when a request is denied shows a selfish way out of harmony with his will. He will not forsake the person wholly surrendered to him, and every sincere prayer is made effective through Christ's blood. Holding fast in prayer therefore means cultivating faith, grasping both the promise and the God whose word is pledged, asking Jesus for blessing and healing and continuing to ask with persevering earnestness without failing or being discouraged, believing that what is asked will surely be received because his faithfulness makes the answer certain. This includes taking God at his word for healing in answer to earnest prayer, letting no appearance cause faith to stagger and letting nothing disturb confidence even when faith is tested, trusting that restoration to health will glorify him.

Faith is to be held without wavering while waiting with patience and hope, united in heart and prayer. The believer's part is to come into connection with the divine channel by putting away all differences, envy and malice and becoming of one heart and mind in unity and tender love, waiting, watching and praying together with strong earnest faith. God is responsible for his part and knows how and when to answer. The answer may come with sudden velocity and overpowering might or be delayed for days and weeks to try faith. Jesus as Representative and Head is ready to do now for humble supplicants who watch and wait what he did for the praying watching ones on the day of Pentecost.

Assurance of Pardon and Cleansing

After confessing sin, believers are to trust without wavering that God will keep His word and forgive and cleanse them. That trust follows confessing sins to Christ with true sorrow and putting them away, holding firmly to faith and believing they are pardoned and cleansed. Believing God's promise of pardon is as much a duty as confessing sin, because He is faithful to do exactly what He has promised. His faithfulness means His Word never fails and He will pardon every transgression of those who confess.

Such steadfast faith refuses to remain under condemnation after pardon has been sought. It refuses to distrust His Word, to doubt His love, or to measure His love by feelings.

After every known wrong is righted, believers are to take God at His word and believe that He accepts and receives them. They are to seek Him diligently and climb by faith into individual experience and salvation instead of going mourning and remaining in mourning. God's faithfulness to His promise is the ground for this firm hold on faith, for He keeps what He promised. Believing is itself part of the work of receiving His salvation.

He will accept those who repent humbly, trust in Jesus as their Saviour, and submit willingly to His way of salvation. Salvation cannot be forced upon anyone, and brief self-denial or temporary restraint from sin is not enough. What pleases God is a life of obedience, and the call is to consecrate oneself to God without delay so that one's name may be recorded in the Lamb's book of life.

Endurance Through Trial and Suffering

Faith must keep hold of God's promises without yielding when trials, adversity, discouragement, hindered efforts and lacking help come, because He is faithful to fulfill His pledged word. This is a living faith that holds on even while trembling, grows through continued victory, leads to overcoming, sustains courage when work becomes difficult and tempts to give up, refines workers as it is proved, and carries believers through to the end of the journey by continuing to hope and trust. In times of trial souls are strengthened with the assurance that whatever God has spoken will be done, trusting Him even when they cannot see and resting calmly in Jesus. Such steadfast trust without wavering gives comfort and hope amid discouragement and hardship.

When pain clouds the mind, holding fast means not trying to think but resting and showing trust by placing soul and body in God's hands. It is confidence that He as faithful Creator keeps His promises and will keep what is entrusted to His care, refusing to doubt His love in weakness and suffering. His faithfulness gives reason to hold firmly to faith and hope even when an answer to prayer is delayed or suffering continues, for He never forsakes a soul wholly surrendered to Him. Delay is given so that holy boldness will hold fast in claiming what He promised, while He may withhold what would harm the soul and give instead what is for its good and His glory.

Holding fast is proved through personal trial, when supposed unbearable difficulties become blessings as they are met in Jesus' strength rather than human strength, with light from heaven and Christ's continual sufficiency. One who is not overcome but stands firmly against enemies and opposers and discharges duties in meekness of wisdom stops depending on others' experience and gains firsthand knowledge that Christ is an all-sufficient Helper, righteousness, fullness and strength, One who sympathizes with weakness and stands beside him even inside prison walls for the truth's sake. The call is to hold firmly to confidence without wavering and continue to the end, remaining firm in principles revealed in God's Word with mind and heart fixed on God while looking to Jesus who knows every pang of anguish. He will not forsake or disappoint those who follow His counsel and keep His way. Holding fast means having present fresh faith rather than depending on past confidence, with confidence kept steady through a soul daily warmed and invigorated by the gospel and refreshed by a daily living new experience bringing comfort, hope and joy in the Holy Ghost, including freedom from disturbance when the Lord raises up youth to lift and carry heavier burdens and proclaim truth.

After the disappointment in the autumn of 1844 the verse applied to Advent believers in trial, danger and duty to keep confidence in the Advent movement instead of abandoning it and to wait, watch and pray until further light came. Those who obeyed held on until by faith they saw the open door of the heavenly sanctuary and Jesus there pleading His blood before the ark in the most holy place. The verse calls for perseverance and refusing to sink down, because Jesus will soon be seen and believers will reign with Him in glory with an inheritance rich, glorious and beyond description. Those who enter God's kingdom by faith must remain firm in profession of faith and will possess it forever, with hope set on an enduring inheritance and reward for those who love God and keep His commandments.

Faithful Life and Mutual Encouragement

Holding fast becomes a living reality as Christ dwells within and divine truths are understood, loved, and incorporated into life, so that what has been heard, seen, and experienced cannot help being shared. That steadfastness accompanies drawing near in faith and continuing to seek deeper knowledge of truth rather than settling for surface understanding, with diligent learning and spiritual growth serving the work of blessing others. Confidence in Christ's sacrifice and unchanging love encourages patience, faith, and hope, and supports working to restore others and foster unity. That assurance calls believers to prepare for service and to help others as Christ helps them, drawing confidence from Christ as High Priest and Advocate who intercedes for them. With Christ having given Himself and now standing in the presence of God as High Priest over the house of God, believers may through Him and with Him enter the true tabernacle not made with hands, drawing near with a true heart in full assurance of faith. Holding fast therefore means keeping hold on the Lord Jesus rather than losing hold to command instead of serve, remembering Gethsemane where He passed His last terrible trial so believers might not perish but have eternal life, and therefore laying down life for the brethren in unity, brotherly love, and good works.

Its instruction is to be taken personally and put into practice, and city workers and all working for God are to go forward in faith, do their best, and watch, work, and pray while trusting God to hear and answer. This work gives an invaluable experience for later service. This faith and hope sustain workers as they carry the message to cities and villages despite efforts to discourage them and turn people from the truth. Holding fast means remaining firm in hope and trust by holding fast to divine power and asking the Lord for strength to do so. God helps those who seek Him earnestly and expect blessing, so they can remain hopeful and cheerful, give thanks and praise, and speak faith, hope, and courage instead of dwelling on difficulties.

The verse appeals to rest the soul on the Lord and trust His care because God is faithful to what He has promised. It is invoked in connection with carrying burdens to God in prayer and fastening closely to Christ by living faith. Safety and happiness are found in making Christ a constant counsellor and exercising faith in His promises instead of carrying one's own burden. Feelings of unrest, homesickness, and loneliness can serve good by teaching dependence on God, so that even with no other friend in the world a person can be happy in Him, finding friendship, love, and consolation that satisfy the most earnest hopes by casting upon Jesus the burden too heavy to bear alone. Happiness in Christ in such loneliness comes through gaining experience in faith and trust, letting Jesus carry the burden.

Holding fast requires maintaining religious principles and acknowledging Christ without letting the world convert or control the conscience. It requires moral independence, firm integrity, and courage without stubbornness, standing in God rather than yielding through fear or seeking human approval, while not stubbornly refusing light. It means keeping religion in one's own keeping and not in any other man's keeping, standing in God, not to be bought or sold, and revealing Christian fortitude. It means serving no man through fear of what he can do, for no one can be a Christian while depending on another man's conscience, because Christ died to give moral independence and freedom to exercise God-given ability. It means being circumscribed by no man or council unless there is decided evidence they are worked by the Holy Spirit, preserving moral independence as free moral agents, letting conscience be controlled by no earthly power, hearkening to the faintest whispers of the Holy Spirit as the voice of the Advocate in the heavenly courts, and placing will and mind where the Holy Spirit can reach them directly rather than exchanging one's judgment for another's.

Believers must hold firmly to faith and the truth revealed without wavering when doing so costs convenience, a good name, or worldly gain. When a doctrine or duty is shown to be required, they should accept it even if obedience brings a cross or persecution. Faithfulness and integrity must be held firmly in His strength without compromise for worldly gain or recognition, and God being faithful to fulfill His word, even an honest physician can succeed through grace. God's promises are the foundation of faith to be trusted without demanding other evidence while obeying His requirements, He works with workers' efforts, while blessings received are limited by weakness of faith. The call to hold firmly and strengthen one another is to be taught and practiced in family life together with Christ's kindness, love, and self-denial. Those represented in the heavenly courts have held their confidence without wavering and remained firm to the end, and being true and loyal to Christ leads to eternal life, with those who entrust the keeping of their souls to God able to rest in faith because God is faithful to His promise. Holding fast without wavering is marked when a new convert facing the ordeal of returning to unbelieving relatives who may disown him and withdraw all help goes forth in strong faith that the Lord will open the way and carry him through, as evidence of sustaining grace.
