Hebrews 10:25
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Hebrews 10:25 commands believers not to abandon gathering together as some do, but to draw near in full assurance, hold fast without wavering, consider one another to stir up love and good works, and exhort one another all the more as they see the day approaching. It rests on sanctification by the once-for-all offering of Christ, forgiveness under the new covenant with God's law in heart and mind, bold access to the holiest by His blood through the new and living way, and Christ as High Priest over the house of God. Assembling is God's appointed means of bringing His children into unity in love and fellowship to help, strengthen and encourage one another, keeping truth vivid and its sanctifying power alive and guarding against spiritual decline from shutting up to self. It is to be practiced by attending promptly and regularly from opening to close, taking active part with short pointed testimony and prayer, edifying one another by interchange of thought, thanksgiving, and earnest prayer that brings refreshment and strength for coming trials. The approaching day is the day of redemption and of Christ's coming, so believers must meet the more often for prayer, confession, study, and exhortation to faithfulness unto the end, refusing to let business, farms, excuses, or opposition keep them from where Christ meets to bless them.
Meaning in Its Context
The verse forbids giving up meeting together as some do, and instead requires considering one another to stir to love and good works, holding fast the profession of faith without wavering, and encouraging one another with increasing urgency as the approaching day is seen drawing near. Meeting and mutual encouragement belong together with unity and Christian fellowship as the practical outworking of firm faith and confidence.
This command stands as response to sanctification through the once-for-all offering of the body of Christ, whose single offering perfected the sanctified forever. It rests on forgiveness under the new covenant with God's laws put in heart and mind and sins and iniquities remembered no more. It rests on boldness to enter the holiest by the blood of Jesus by the new and living way consecrated through His flesh, with Christ as High Priest over the house of God and entrance into the true tabernacle not made with hands as His beloved household. Through the sacrifice made in their behalf sins may be perfectly forgiven, with dependence resting not on what man can do but on what God can do through Christ.
On that ground believers draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith with hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and bodies washed with pure water, with cleansed conscience and full heart. When wholly surrendered to God and fully believing, the blood of Christ cleanses from all sin, the conscience is freed from condemnation, sanctification can be claimed, the favor of God enjoyed, and all can be made perfect in Christ Jesus. The repenting believing one is accepted in the Beloved as Christ accepts the surrender of the soul to be molded after His likeness. Those who so draw near and hold fast because He who promised is faithful wear no yoke of bondage but only Christ's yoke of keeping His Father's commandments, living and speaking and acting as children of light and representatives of Christ, sincere and speaking in Christ in the sight of God as a spectacle unto the world and to angels and to men.
The whole of Hebrews 10 is instruction for those working for God in the cities to read carefully and take personally and apply to themselves. It calls them to go forward in faith doing their very best, watching and working and praying with confidence that God will hear and answer their petitions. Thereby they gain an experience invaluable for later and after work. The eleventh chapter holds up the experience of the faithful as their example, where faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.
Purpose and Blessings of Gathering
Assembling together is the appointed means for leading children of God into unity, so that in Christian love and fellowship they help, strengthen and encourage one another. None of the household of faith is to neglect this gathering, but all are to feel interest in the cause and move in union with brethren instead of keeping aloof. Where there is such union there is strength, while one or two staying apart and seeking to go to heaven alone cannot prosper. If need requires, the coming together includes fasting, confession of sin, humiliation of soul, and diligent search for the cause of soul-sickness until it is healed, with self laid aside and conversion first so that every heart is filled with true love and brethren love as brethren in prayer meetings and love-feasts. Only then are efforts for unbelievers acceptable and the salvation of God seen.
Meeting with fellow believers strengthens faith against the enemy, providing the place to worship and receive blessing while each has opportunity to encourage others, witness to truth, and act as a missionary. Associating to encourage and strengthen one another in serving God keeps truth vivid and its sanctifying influence alive in heart and mind. Neglecting this fellowship dulls the importance of truth, weakens its sanctifying power, and brings spiritual decline. He who shuts himself up to himself fails to fill the position designed for him, for all are children of one Father dependent upon one another for happiness, under claims of God and humanity. Proper cultivation of the social nature develops sympathy with brethren and brings strength for service and happiness in efforts to bless others, even when gathering requires sacrifice and subordination of selfish worldly interests to spiritual and eternal interests.
Believers assemble to edify one another by interchange of thought, relating daily experiences and feelings, expressing thanksgiving and sincere desire for divine enlightenment to know God, and learning one another's hopes and aspirations. Communing together about Christ maintains spiritual life and daily connection with Him rather than mere form and ceremony. Earnest heartfelt prayers offered in faith bring refreshment and vigor from God, with light, courage and strength gained from one another. Such communing strengthens the soul for conflicts and trials to come, since each is part of the great web of humanity and personal experience is largely shaped by the character of associates. Fellowship thus sharpens perception, makes believers glad, and fills hearts with love for God, bringing blessings often missed by withdrawal into self.
These assemblies are not designed for personal refreshing only, but to inspire greater zeal to communicate received consolation to others groping in darkness of error. Increased light multiplies responsibility and increases necessity of imparting to others what has been received, with cheerful faithful testimony strengthening one another.
Fellowship with those of like faith brings strength and blessing, allowing sharing of experience and growth in piety. It strengthens those whose faith is weak and helps bring those who do not know truth to conversion. Visiting from church to church in Christ-like concern for spiritual welfare encourages and revives both those visited and those who serve, so that even small churches are benefited and strengthened to stand faithfully for truth.
These earthly gatherings prepare the way to receive in the heavenly assemblies the fulfillment of the pledges of inheritance, giving opportunity to speak with one another and gather all possible help for right preparation. In every assembly believers meet with Christ, the Master of assemblies. There they are to show personal interest in one another and know one another in Christ Jesus, considering one another, which is the keynote of the gospel, while self is the keynote of the world.
Religious gatherings spread a feast of the Word for all, yet no one is helped by the food unless he partakes himself and makes practical application to his own soul. Each is to keep his own personality and personal experience while meeting with others, awaking and not giving up meeting together. So doing strengthens soul, body and spirit, so that each shows what the gospel means to him, every song of praise finds answer in his heart, and every prayer lifts the soul into a higher, holier atmosphere.
Faithful Practice of Meetings
Meetings of the church are to be made interesting, with energy shown both in them and outside them, and no one is to come merely to sit still and look at others, for each person present has a duty to take a living part. That part is to have something to say for God from individual experience, telling soul struggles and victories obtained, and above all offering praise from a thankful heart that Jesus died. When each dwells profitably on this matter, the blessing comes in large measure.
Testimony and prayer are to be short and pointed, glorifying God and His truth, His glory, power, and mercy, for tongue and utterance are gifts for which account must be given. Long, vain, mocking prayers that weary angels and displease God are to be set aside, nor is anyone to expect to overcome by the blood of the Lamb alone without personal effort. Overcoming is by the blood of the Lamb and the word of personal testimony together, through active effort to testify and to strengthen one another with words.
Those who so assemble and speak often of God are blessed and refreshed, and are made to grow in faith by feeling needy, asking for definite needs, believing while asking that God gives, and receiving. All are edified thereby, the weak are made strong and encouraged, and the discouraged are made to look up. God hears and remembers such fellowship, and those who do not forsake assembling but sustain their meetings with active interest are written in a book of remembrance kept by Him.
Attendance is to be prompt and regular, from the opening through the closing service, and not broken off before the benefit is received. Leaving early weakens the meeting and forfeits final opportunities for spiritual renewal, with messages, warnings, and help that may guard against temptation and be needed for faithfulness. Small matters are not to keep anyone away even when only two or three are gathered, and attendance at Sabbath school does not replace remaining for public worship and Bible instruction.
Even when few in number and without a preacher or minister, believers are still to assemble rather than neglect meeting together. One person should take the lead in the Spirit and in the love of Jesus, without long sermonizing or talking merely to fill time. The gathering can include reading and teaching from Scripture, singing, prayer, exhortation, and welcome to unbelievers.
Gathering for public worship is a divine privilege available to all as far as possible, essential and beneficial, and is not to be neglected or treated lightly nor stayed away from needlessly. Caring for the sick may sometimes prevent attendance, and relieving suffering on the Sabbath is a work of mercy and not a violation of the Sabbath. But regularly spending the Sabbath in writing or other labor without special need harms the soul, sets a poor example, dishonors God, and can weaken moral and spiritual life.
Leaders are to set the example by faithful attendance and not treat meetings as a burden nor attend only occasionally, for such neglect gives others excuse to stay away. Those in charge, especially of the youth, should see that right habits are formed in attending and working, ascertain the cause when meetings are neglected, and by kind, tactful effort arouse the careless and revive waning interest. Students’ studies are not to be so numerous as to crowd out these exercises, and no work concerning self excuses neglect of sacred service, for it is better to lay aside such work than to neglect duty to God.
Every believer is to take his place in person among the rank and file, put forth extra exertion to come, bring the family, and gain every spiritual advantage possible, including camp meetings and great gatherings attended with receptive hearts to hear precious truth. Saving travel money to give for the work, living widely scattered, or saying another will go are not right reasons to stay home. Those who need the light most lose much they might have gained by separating from the meetings, especially at the start of an independent business career, for leaving the assemblies is one step out of the right path leading to a second wrong move.
Assembling is entirely vain without childlike simplicity and true humility, and these graces must return to the church for gathering to have value. It becomes fruitful when preceded at home by praying and humbling the heart, then joining the assembly to exalt and glorify God with uplifting faith that blesses others.
Mutual Exhortation and Unity
Exhortation works through unselfish love, compassion and tender interest that stir others to love and good works, and such efforts bear fruit to God's glory. Holding firmly to faith without wavering belongs together with encouraging one another toward love and good works, especially as the day approaches. Following Christ's example means drawing near to those who are needy and suffering and offering them compassionate spiritual help.
Gathering expresses Christlike love and holiness as Christians draw near to one another in Christ. It requires unity, brotherly love, harmonious work, and serving rather than commanding. Remembering Gethsemane, where Christ passed through His last terrible trial and laid down His life so believers might not perish but have eternal life, believers ought to lay down their lives for the brethren. This stands with having Christ as High Priest over the house of God, through whom believers enter the true tabernacle not made with hands as His beloved household, drawing near with a true heart in full assurance of faith with hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and bodies washed with pure water, and holding fast the profession of faith without wavering because He who promised is faithful, with mutual encouragement increasing as the approaching day draws nearer.
Considering one another is the keynote of the gospel, while self is the keynote of the world, requiring personal interest in one another and knowing one another in Christ Jesus. When unity and brotherly love are lacking, ministers and lay members must come together with deep humiliation, sincere repentance, confession of sin, humiliation of soul, and diligent search for the cause of soul-sickness until it is healed, even with fasting if need be, until converted to love as brethren. Self must be laid aside and conversion must come first, with every heart filled with true love in prayer meetings and love-feasts together. Only then will efforts for unbelievers be acceptable to God and result in seeing His salvation.
Genuine Christian friendship and fellowship watches over one another, prays earnestly for one another, and faithfully admonishes and corrects with growing care as the end draws near so that errors may be healed. This mutual prayer and exhortation includes arousing idle workers to their responsibility and urging them to work earnestly for the Master while time for labor is limited. Without these practical acts the blessing God intends through fellowship is lost. Harsh, unfeeling conduct and criticism destroy desire to gather with the church and can even drive souls from the truth. Christians should confess their own wrong conduct and be changed by transforming grace, so that when they meet they speak of Jesus and His love rather than criticize one another.
Urgency of Approaching Day
The approaching day is the day of redemption, the day of the Lord, the day of God, and the day of Christ's coming. Believers must not give up meeting together as some do, but must encourage one another toward love and good works, and do so all the more as they see that day near. As it approaches they are to meet often for prayer, confession of sin and humiliation of soul, study of the Word, communion with one another and with God, and exhortation of one another to be faithful unto the end. Gathering is God's appointed means of leading His children into unity, so that in Christian love and fellowship they help, strengthen, and encourage one another. Meeting together keeps the truth important in the mind and its sanctifying influence alive in the heart, while neglecting fellowship weakens faith and spirituality, so the call to gather holds even when it requires sacrifice.
These earthly assemblies prepare the way to receive in the heavenly assemblies the fulfillment of the pledged inheritance, for in every assembly believers meet with Christ, the Master of assemblies. There they are to speak with one another, show personal interest in one another, and know one another in Christ Jesus, with every heart filled with true love for the brethren, and in this they will see the salvation of God. Considering one another is the keynote of the gospel, while self is the keynote of the world. Sabbath-keepers in particular are to attend faithfully, speak often of God and His truth, and use their words to strengthen one another, and God records those who so assemble and speak of Him. Overcoming comes through the blood of the Lamb and the word of personal testimony, not through Christ's blood alone without active effort to testify, for speech is a gift for which people are accountable and should honor God's truth and mercy.
Perplexed and disappointed believers awaiting the Master's return must not renounce faith but cling to hope, because the word of the Lord is sure and cannot fail and Jesus will not long delay His coming. Because the signs of the times show the end of all things is near, they must watch and hold themselves ready for the coming of the Master at any time, waiting with hope and trust. They are to continue meeting together for instruction, encouragement, and comfort, holding fast in hope and trust so that their light shines forth into the darkness of the world.
Seeing the day approaching should make those whose inner life is hid with Christ in God pray habitually as Christ prayed and search the Scriptures for themselves with growing earnestness. Such ones love God supremely and their neighbors as themselves. They give themselves to God as a freewill offering, including all they have and all their means as the Lord's goods, and bear fruit in good works.
Warnings and Faithful Application
Believers must take decided interest in religious meetings and make earnest, determined efforts to be at every meeting possible, to be found among the few who worship God, exhort one another, witness for truth, and bear uplifting testimony full of courage, hope and victory. Every soul who loves truth is needed on the Lord's side as a home missionary to strengthen what remains ready to die, and meeting together provides worship, Christ's blessing, encouragement, and opportunity for missionary service. No one has strength alone to stand the enemy's sharp assaults but is kept by God's power through faith, so business must be shaped not to become all-absorbing and quench love to God and others. Farms, business, work demands and supposed excuses must not keep saints from where Jesus meets to bless them, for neglecting fellowship to devote more time to temporal interests puts earthly interests first, robs God of time due His service, keeps people from learning His will and perfecting character, and brings curse rather than blessing. Some are seldom found at the house of worship, and repeated excuses conceal lack of religious interest cultivated in the family, while workers who think their work leaves no time for meetings need the fellowship and spiritual encouragement found in gathering.
The enemy has a hand in creating circumstances to keep worshipers away, and powers from beneath are stirred with intense activity to deceive and lead away from truth into false paths. It is therefore urgent to place oneself in associations where heaven's light shines, to receive God's messages for this time and become a center diffusing the light Christ imparts. God blesses the life He Himself orders, and character under the Holy Spirit's teaching grows richer by experience, maturing in this life to bloom everlastingly in the future life. Staying away remains a free choice that Satan tempts but does not force, leaving each person free to accept or refuse. Carelessness and negligence in maintaining the principle of meeting with the saints leads to darkness, want of faith, sickly religion, waning piety, weakened moral and spiritual life, and loss of close relationship with Christ. Choosing worldly gatherings and pleasures instead weakens moral power and can leave faith without life or zeal, so assembling is both privilege and duty for gaining strength and encouraging others. Sabbath work to relieve the sick is mercy, but regularly spending the Sabbath in writing or other labor without special need harms the soul and sets a poor example.
Some forsake meetings to avoid discomfort of a troubled conscience, but avoidance does not solve the spiritual problem that makes truth painful, and unless reformed they may lose interest and love for truth and return to opposition to God. Others abandon fellowship when wishes are crossed or influence is limited, which cuts them off from church influence and exposes them to full temptation of the world. Like Israel, who lost spiritual benefits by separating from the divinely appointed place where servants gave warning, encouragement and reproof so received light could guide others, those who separate from worship lose much they might have gained. Staying in the channel of light means attending assemblies such as camp meeting with receptive hearts for precious truth, and leaving them is one step out of the right path leading to a second wrong move, especially at the start of an independent business career when need for light is greatest. God's messengers labor earnestly whether few or many are present, dwelling on practical godliness, because all possible light and truth is needed at this time.
It is duty to assemble whenever consistent and leave consequences with God, with salvation of the soul and fidelity to God supreme and everything else secondary. Human love and attachments must not steal the heart from Jesus, and even a husband's requirements must not be obeyed when they come between soul and God. Opposition is to be met with kindness without retaliation, respecting others' wishes in all things possible without dishonoring God, while openly standing as a soldier in Christ's army. The command binds under persecution, when believers continued to pray and praise despite laws forbidding unauthorized meetings, meeting secretly when necessary and enduring suffering. Even when forced into places of refuge, they continued assembling with God's word read and united worship.
The assembling includes the prayer meeting where God meets His people, and to turn from it repeatedly in infatuation to enjoy society of one with no love for God and no attraction to religious life breaks the command. Such turning sacrifices religious privilege at unaffordable loss and leaves no ground to expect God to prosper a marriage union with such a person. Assembling does not require always attending distant meetings at great expense of money and time, but is a question of duty to be studied with self-denial, economy, regard for a husband's time, and united family interest, finding sweetest enjoyment at home and not carrying visiting too far. Believers should remain where duty places them trusting God's care amid cares without faltering, and go as often as possible where prayer is customarily made. Even in old age they should assemble as often as they can, especially at great gatherings, never letting saving money or lack of means block spiritual interest, for so doing strengthens faith, increases strength, deepens attraction to heaven, and makes the last days happiest and best.
No personal work excuses neglect of the Lord's sacred service, and it is better to lay aside self-concerned work than neglect duty to God. Those in charge, especially of youth, should see right habits formed in attending and working, ascertain causes of neglect, and by kind tactful effort arouse the careless and revive waning interest. Associating together requires subordinating selfish worldly interests to spiritual and eternal interests, as shown by Israel devoting more than a month yearly to feasts. All are children of one Father dependent on one another for happiness, with claims of God and humanity upon them, and proper cultivation of social nature brings sympathy with brethren and happiness in blessing others, while shutting oneself up to self fails the designed position and brings loss of vividness of truth, enlightenment, sanctifying influence, and spirituality.
