Rahab Holding the Scarlet Cord at NightBible World
11:31Hebrews 11:31
By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.
By faith the harlot Rahab received the spies with peace and did not perish with those who refused to believe. Her faith knew and recognized that the Lord alone is God, the true ruler of heaven and earth, and that knowledge brought her salvation. Though she was a heathen woman of Jericho, a foreigner outside Israel, her deliverance shows God's mercy toward idolaters who acknowledge His divine authority and that He makes no distinction by nationality, race, or social status but opens access to Himself for all. The verse belongs to the chapter on faith that turns the mind from visible discouragement to unseen things and looks forward to a better country and a heavenly city built by God. She stands among the heroes of faith commended for firm principles, fidelity, and obedience as an example for Christians, for the faith that worked in God's servants of old can work wherever people trust God today to strengthen them to endure trials and make them channels of His power.
Rahab's Saving Faith
Hebrews 11 belongs to the chapter on faith, which turns the mind away from visible discouragement toward unseen things and looks forward to a better country and a heavenly city built by God. Rahab was a heathen woman in Jericho, a foreigner outside Israel. Her faith knew that the Lord alone was God, recognizing Israel's God as the true ruler of heaven and earth, and that knowledge of God brought her salvation.
By faith she received the spies with peace, and because of that trust she was spared from destruction and did not perish with those who did not believe and refused to believe. Her deliverance shows God's mercy toward idolaters who acknowledge His divine authority. Her salvation through faith though a foreigner shows that God makes no distinction by nationality, race, or social status, and that Christ's redemption opens access to God for all people.
Example for Believers Today
Rahab stands among the heroes of faith as one commended for firm principles, for fidelity to God, and for obedience, and her life is held up as an example for Christians to follow. That fidelity and obedience made her light shine for those in darkness, so that others were led to glorify God. She belongs to the great cloud of witnesses surrounding believers, one who met evils and difficulties in her way and in the Lord's name braced herself successfully against the opposing forces of evil. She was sustained and strengthened with the Lord holding her by His hand, and her witness joins the call to lay aside every weight of evil habits and practices formed by following natural dispositions and the sin that easily besets, and to run with patience the race set before them.
The faith that worked in God's servants of old in sacred history can work in believers today, strengthening them to endure trials and making them channels of God's power wherever people trust God. Her place among the faithful gives instruction that those working for God are to take to heart as they go forward doing their best.
