Moses Before Mount Sinai in Fireby emmanuel_higgins

Hebrews 12:20

( For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:

The prohibition against touching the mountain belongs to the fearful manifestation at the mount that could be physically touched and that burned with fire, accompanied by blackness and darkness and tempest and the sound of a trumpet and a voice uttering words. That tangible, blazing, dark, storm-shrouded encounter with trumpet blast and spoken word forms the setting in which the severe command was given. The order that even a beast coming into contact with the mountain was to be stoned or pierced with a dart was part of what was commanded.

That death sentence upon man or animal for touching the mount was among the things the people found unendurable, so that they entreated that the voice speaking to them should speak no further. Those who believe have not come to that terrible mount of touch and fire and darkness and judgment. They have come instead to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels and to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, to God the Judge of all and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant.
