Hebrews 13:6

So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

Because God has promised never to leave nor forsake His people, they are to be free from covetousness and content with what they have, so that they may boldly declare the Lord as their helper without fear of what people may do. The Helper so confessed is the Lord Jesus Himself, the Redeemer and everlasting Friend whose promise is sure. To say this means refusing to put oneself in the keeping of people and instead trusting God by seeking His counsel, doing His will, and depending on the Holy Spirit, rather than trusting human authority, education, or self. That trust gives courage to stand firm without fear of opposition, unfair treatment, or coming trial, as one united to God by faith with angels round about and the wisdom and power of heaven fighting the battles against sin, temptation, and the powers of darkness. It is also present help in affliction, bodily pain, weakness, sickness, and discouragement, and unfailing strength for earnest work and witness, so that the weak are sustained, comforted, and taught to labor on without fainting.

Wording and Immediate Context

Because God has said He will never leave nor forsake His people, their conduct is to be without covetousness and they are to be content with what they have, so that they may boldly declare the Lord as helper without fear of what people may do. That declaration forbids making self the main center and demanding special favor, and it requires standing shoulder to shoulder with fellow believers, bringing every entrusted talent to help the work, and gathering with Christ rather than scattering from Him in spirit and action.

The assurance rests on the promise that the Lord will never leave nor forsake His servants, and it holds whatever the circumstances, however dark and mysterious providence seems, even when the path leads through deep waters and repeated trials and bereavements. It is precious in affliction and bereavement, gives courage to prepare to meet the soon-coming Lord, to see Him as He is and be made like Him, and is to be remembered so as not to be deceived about what is coming upon the world. Helpless people of themselves can do nothing and without the Spirit of God there is utter helplessness, so strength lies in hiding in Jesus and holding fast to the arm of Omnipotence and leaning upon Him in order to grow strong to do His will, trusting that God can do more in one moment to convict people than human effort can do in a lifetime, and therefore there is no need to worry or fear for those who trust in Him.

Saying this boldly is the privilege of believers, yet done humbly, declaring that the Lord is helper and that they shall not be moved from steadfastness. The Lord has pledged strength to stand fast and unmovable, always abounding in His work, without dishonoring Him by faithless unbelief and doubt. Searching the Scriptures gives the lessons, help, sufficiency and assurance for this confession, the life is hid with Christ in God and bound up with His life so that because He lives they shall live also. Speaking faith instead of discouragement confirms faith, closes the door to distrust, opens the door to faith, rolls back despondency and gloom, and enables triumph through the atonement and righteousness of Christ while helping others see their only help is in God by fleeing to Christ as refuge.

The Helper named in the verse is the Lord Jesus Himself, also the Redeemer and everlasting Friend, who loves and blesses His fellow workers and whose promise is sure, giving His people reason to be courageous and free from worry.

Trusting God Not People

To say boldly that the Lord is helper means refusing to commit oneself into the keeping of people and trusting God instead by seeking His counsel and doing His will in dependence on the cooperation of the Divine Spirit. No advantage and not even the highest education can be a blessing or qualify anyone to become a channel of light without divine enlightenment and the Divine Spirit's cooperation. Human weakness is met by relying on Jesus Christ and seeking the help of the Holy Spirit rather than trusting human counsel, human authority, personal advantages, or education to bless or to make useful. This belongs to the storms and tempests of life, when the divine Pilot must be kept on board and acted under as divine Guide at every step, especially in choosing a course of study. Pushing Him overboard in order to trust finite people or to steer by self brings disaster and wreckage that is then wrongly blamed on God.

Applied to decisions about study and life, this means not depending wholly on human authority, instructors, or personal judgment and not fearing human opposition or human consequences. Every human suggestion is to be taken to God in prayer, with His counsel and the Holy Spirit's guidance sought again and again until one is convinced whether the counsel is of God or of people. Then action is to follow God's will and direction under God as leader and divine Guide rather than committing oneself to human advice or steering life by one's own judgment.

Courage Without Fear of People

Trust in the Lord as helper gives courage not to fear what other people may do, enabling a person to stand firm by holding to Jesus' help even when feeling unfairly treated or facing human opposition. That trust keeps believers on vantage ground through coming trials without fear, because they belong to Him, are loved by Him, and have Him as helper and God. Those who do their best can trust Him for help and meet their work with courage rather than fear.

This confidence was shown when Luther faced a threat on his life from a stranger who approached him with a hidden, concealed pistol. Trusting himself to God as help and strength and shield, believing he was in God's hands and under God's defense, he remained unafraid of what his enemies might do to him.

When pressed by poverty and by cruel railing, threats, abuse, outrage and insult, even in her own house, bringing sore distress and perplexity, a believer can still confidently declare God as helper. He does not leave her alone to perish but imparts strength and raises up friends to aid when least expected. God gives the same personal help in a contested business matter so there is no need to fear what people can do, calling for placing the whole case in the hands of Christ as the great Advocate and making God the only trust with confidence that He will keep the feet from being moved. That trust forbids signing proposed terms that would give a scheming opponent an unjust advantage and dishonor God as degrading concession, while still allowing a fair payment of fifteen hundred dollars to settle the matter rightly.

The bold declaration belongs to those who hold fast to the faith delivered to the saints, forsake sin, and believe and live by the truth. Faith joined with humble obedience has a power the world cannot withstand and strengthens believers to do what God calls them to do. Accepting Christ and recognizing the binding claims of God's law lead to obedience and a life consecrated to God's service rather than neutrality, bringing a clear fearless stand, enjoyment of God's blessings, and confession of God as the only true God and Jesus Christ as the supreme and everlasting Good. Believing that God is helping gives courage and victory over temptation by keeping the will on the Lord's side and resisting the pull of custom, appetite and passion even when it requires every bit of willpower. That alignment brings the emotions under Jesus' control and gives a firm foundation, while God works for the person and shapes him into a vessel for honorable use.

Heavenly Aid in Conflict

The bold confession belongs to the believer united to God by simple faith with the love of Christ in the soul, reckoning himself dead to sin and alive to God irrespective of feeling, while Jesus strengthens the moral powers by grace. He makes it as he toils in battle as a faithful soldier of Christ on the borders of the eternal world. He has the sympathy of the whole loyal universe, with ministering angels round about to aid in the conflict, and the infinite wisdom and power of God with the heavenly host fighting his battles for him. Therefore he can declare God as helper, strength and shield, with assurance that he shall not be overcome.

This confidence grows through humble, watchful, faithful prayer and reliance on God rather than independence. By it the Lord can assist the weak against Satan's snares, so that a believer can stand as a champion of faith. Believers doing the work of reform will face trials that test faith, love, patience and constancy, but they are not helpless before the powers of darkness because God helps them. When they walk humbly with God in the Spirit of Christ they lay heavy burdens on Christ the great Burden-bearer and triumph through God's presence with them.

All heaven is interested in their salvation, with thousands upon thousands and ten thousand times ten thousand angels commissioned as ministers to the heirs of salvation crowding against evil and pressing back the powers of darkness that seek their destruction. In that reforming work everything possible is to be done to keep their special work among themselves as far as outlay of means is concerned. The Lord is helper and guard in front and behind to workers who take hold and do their very best without asking for higher wages. When more pay is truly impossible, they are to work without it and leave it for others to see the need, for God puts it into their hearts to see it and to speak a word that has more influence than a thousand self-spoken words and gives the workers a proper standing before the people.

Help in Suffering and Weakness

In affliction the declaration is to be spoken as personal confession in direct conversation with Jesus, resting on having Him by the side watching. Great trials are permitted to come as gold tried in the crucible to test trust, giving opportunity to show trust in the Redeemer and to let all see in whom trust is placed. That trust is shown through cheerfulness seen in the countenance and courage that refuses to be moved or shaken and knows no fear. Speaking words of courage in trial encourages other souls and sows seed that will spring up and bear fruit.

Present help is given in bodily pain and weakness that limits work, such as trouble in head and teeth, severe physical pain with depression and fear that the heart will fail amid exhausting labor and bodily weakness, and continuing suffering. Keeping the heart lifted to Him brings His help to hold faith without yielding, to be carried through trouble, and to have peace, comfort, cheerfulness and thankfulness. Knowing Him comes from proving His promise true as He sustains moment by moment through nights of pain when standing before people seems impossible. That sustaining strength enables continued labor for the truth even in old age without showing unbelief.

The Lord stands beside His servants as unfailing support and defense who removes worry and gives courage amid pain and uncertainty. He takes the person's case in hand and works with them as they restore physical powers through effort rather than through brooding over the past or worrying about the future. As great Healer He strengthens those who look to Him in faith, giving comfort and the grace of Christ in severe sickness such as influenza and sleeplessness unto improvement. As restorer He strengthens and blesses those who trust Him and will not let them be overcome by the enemy, giving sustaining grace with clearness of mind and speech, strength, fortitude and courage to be asked for from God day and night even in exhaustion and bodily weakness that prevents work and in speaking to His people.

Jesus is Helper every day, not to be doubted for a moment, and confidence in His help is the greatest comfort. The call is to look up and believe and trust fully in the Living God without discouragement and with hope, since God hears prayer, loves with fatherly care, and is to be praised. Human strength is weakness and nothing can be done of oneself, so blessing, open understanding, grace and wisdom are to be sought from God in early morning prayer with trust for help while striving to become all that one possibly can be. That trust is exercised even on a day of bodily feebleness and despite difficulty and lack of sleep, by seeking Him in prayer early in the morning and continuing the work given to do.

Confidence in the Lord as helper dispels discouragement and fear and sustains needed work despite difficulty, confusing advice and limited means, so that a person need not fail, become discouraged or disheartened when a task is daunting. Even in personal weakness, confidence in His help brings assurance that He is guiding and enables faithfulness to duty without fear or confusion. The Lord helps and sustains His people, His promises and strength enable continued work even when weak, His light guides the way, and looking to Jesus keeps a person from being broken or overcome by Satan. The verse is reflected in confidence in God as helper and praise for His mercies and sustaining power, giving courage and faith amid difficult work.

The Lord is the helper of His people day by day, sustaining and blessing those who trust in Him. Therefore even in old age, when feeling mortal and in poor health amid reminders and limitations, they keep courage and put hope and trust in Him. Their remaining work is to be finished with joy and not with grief, and to be done quickly while still needing human helpers amid unwanted changes in workers. Confidence in Him as helper gives courage in the face of human danger or hardship and refuses discouragement.

Strength for Work and Witness

Christ is the helper of His people in earnest work, so they are not left to labor alone, and angels are joined with them as helpers to work His works in the home, in the church and in the world faithfully and untiringly until they reap in due season if they faint not. He is a present helper and fortress who never leaves those who make God their trust destitute of His Spirit, but teaches and leads and guides them while they wait and watch and pray with the future unknown, keeping the heart stayed upon God continually in humility of mind and love and reverent fear. That keeping enables testimony borne with power to affect hearts in labor for souls who must give an account. He guides matters and arranges them so His workers can succeed, and no one who trusts Him does so in vain or is disappointed.

Life and work can be entrusted to Him as helper and God, giving courage and confidence to act in faith. If life is spared, useful books can be completed, and if life ends, the printed work can continue to help others. His support gives confidence in seeking Him for wisdom and grace to carry out the work. His help is to be sought in opening the way for the planned work at Loma Linda, and in working through people in Maitland to establish and sustain the work. He provides helping strength to carry out planned duties such as traveling to attend meetings.

He is a mighty helper giving sure divine assistance to the humble worker who obediently responds to the call of God. Whoever does not shrink from the cross connected with working for others, but denies self to win Christ and relies wholly upon Him, will have Him accomplish a great work through them in gathering sheaves for Jesus, and by this earnest unselfish effort for others they keep their own souls alive. When a person seeks to do God's will and glorify His name, the Lord will not refuse the help asked for. Depending wholly on Him brings strength in weakness, and placing burdens on Him brings comfort, strength and hope, and holding firmly to His hand He leads safely. Even fear about speaking in a crowded church can be met with more strength than expected, unto praise for His mercy and help.

He Himself stands beside His servants as unfailing support when they are called to give the last message, the last call to a perishing world. He knows their sickness and suffering and gives strength to get up and speak to crowds who have never heard, even when feeling unwell, which removes complaint and makes one ready to answer every such call. His child can therefore be of good courage, fear nothing and refuse discouragement. It means not looking on the dark side but looking to Jesus, trusting in the Lord continually, shining in His light, and speaking wise and well-chosen words of testimony and encouragement to young and old with freedom, strength and clearness. Holding the beginning of confidence firm unto the end gives hope of meeting again in the family of God when the redeemed are gathered home. Children too are to be taught to rely on Him as helper and exceeding great reward and to grow in His love, peace and grace.

Jesus is the Helper in all necessities, and putting trust in Him brings His help, goodness and strengthening grace. To say this boldly means to speak it openly as His witness in the meeting instead of remaining silent, telling how precious He is and how He helps. This common testimony links hearts by love centered on Jesus as the common Saviour, the object of the soul's affection and the center of hope for eternal life. In perplexities believers can stand for God with full assurance because the Lord Jesus is their Helper. He gave His life for them, and as they give their lives to His work He guides and sustains them.
