Hebrews 13:8

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever, everlasting and unchanging in His being and character. His love, mercy and compassion toward His people do not lessen with time but remain as tender and mighty as when He gave His life to purchase their salvation. He still walks with His followers to guide, strengthen, comfort and heal them, and His grace, keeping power and help are as available now as ever. His truth, Word and law are as fixed and binding as He is Himself, unchanged by human tradition, opinion or attempts to alter them. Therefore He remains forever the center of all true teaching and the unfailing source of wisdom, peace and answered prayer for all who trust and seek Him in faith.

Timeless Unchanging Christ

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever, everlasting and unchanging through all time. He has always existed and does not change, and no human words can fully describe His greatness and majesty. He existed before all things, made all things, and all things were made for Him. He is the judge of all, who founded His church and will bring its work to completion when its final stone is set securely in place.

His repentance is not a change of mind as human repentance is, but a change in circumstances and relationship. People may enter or leave His favor while His character and the conditions for acceptance remain unchanged. Saul's disobedience changed his relationship to God, not God's requirements.

He is the unchanging source of strength through past, present, and future, dependent on no human instrument, word, or authority. When self-reliant workers who think everything depends on them are set aside, He still carries His cause forward through unexpected channels and unthought-of ways and by the weakest instruments, being seen and acknowledged in effectual help. The hand that redeemed will keep working for His people, and in His own time He will magnify His name and reveal the nothingness of men. Those engaged in His sacred work must therefore share the pleasantness and sweetness of His character with grateful hearts and never dream that their own position is immovable.

Unchanging Love and Care

His love for His children does not change but remains as strong and tender as ever, stronger than death and without variableness or shadow of turning. Having died to purchase salvation and to unite believers to Himself mystically and eternally one, He directs all His powers and employs the vast resources of heaven toward their good. Although sin has existed for ages trying to counteract this love and obstruct its flowing earthward, it still flows in rich currents to those for whom He died, the same yesterday, today, and forever. He never changes and never disappoints those who trust in Him, giving reason to submit to God, to trust Him, to rejoice in His love, and to find sweet communion with Him. He remains unchangeable in mercy, compassion, and love, showing patience and tenderness toward weak, erring disciples who lack faith and courage, seeing their weakness yet not casting them off, with power to save. As the Friend who sympathized with the afflicted on earth, He still loves and supports His people today as He has in the past. He remains the same merciful, compassionate Saviour in heaven as He was on earth, working for those who hold to Him by living faith so they need not be left alone to fall under Satan's power.

He continually seeks our good, encouraging and guiding and leading step by step as a faithful High Priest touched with the feeling of our infirmities. Unchangeable in human tenderness combined with divinity, He always uses His divine ministering attributes to do good, and what He is today as such a High Priest He will remain tomorrow and forevermore. He is Guide to lead, Teacher to instruct, Counselor and Friend to counsel, and Donor who bestows blessings upon His church in response to faith, inviting us to abide and make home with Him, and abiding with Him brings an end to friction, ill-temper, and irritation. The help and grace He gave during His earthly life remain available to every soul who feels need of His grace, for He has not changed and continues to be with His followers. He walks beside those who bear burdens and suffer for Him to give rest and support, and His obedience to the Father is their example in the path of obedience He has already trodden. Depression, hardship, and spiritual darkness do not mean that God has changed or forsaken the believer, for His favor rests on His unchanging character and sure promises, not on feelings or constant joy. Faith must therefore hold to those promises, remember His past dealings, and trust Him even when the way is dark.

Changing circumstances do not change His relation to us, for He remains the same and asks unwavering trust in His love. His keeping power has not diminished and Christ is a perfect Saviour, giving reason to resist unbelief and turn toward God when tempted to despair. Because He is unchangeable His promises remain sure: faith still has power in prayer, humble obedience still receives its reward, and His people receive the promises according to their faith and obedience. He lives and remains a source of peace and comfort amid confusion and difficulties. Fixing the eyes on Him above the turmoil of daily events enables believers to endure by faith as though seeing the invisible and to look forward with joy to the finishing of the mystery.

Unchanging Truth and Law

Like its divine Author, the truth is unchangeable in its requirements through all time, and because Jesus Christ does not change it does not yield to human traditions or opinions, does not harmonize with them or conform to them. It has always set God’s people apart from the world, and when those who separate from God call darkness light and error truth, darkness never proves itself to be light and error never becomes truth. God’s Word is unchanging and as inflexible as His character, which is the same yesterday, today, and forever. It reveals the guilt of sin and has power upon the human heart to reclaim people from sin, to make them right and keep them right and keep them from transgression, and nothing less than this revealed truth can reclaim or keep anyone, so it is to be studied, obeyed, and brought into practical life.

The Word of God is fixed and unchanging, and God will judge every person by it, to vindicate the righteous and expose the evil. God remains unchanging through all time, so the setting up of a false sabbath has not succeeded in changing His law. Through it the enemy has turned the sign-board toward disobedience and thought to change times and laws by setting aside a plain Thus saith the Lord, but the seventh-day Sabbath still stands declared to be a sign between Himself and His people throughout their generations forever. He is still the mighty God of Israel above all nations, with all nations as nothing before Him, and He is just as jealous for His law now as in the days of Ahab and Elijah.

Because God does not change, the practical instructions He gave through Moses to the Hebrews for their physical and moral benefit are still binding and were also impressed on the writers of the New Testament. The gospel does not abolish the Mosaic rules of cleanliness or free Christians from their restraint, because cleanliness, health, and purity of spirit come from the same unchanging source.

Christ-Centered Preaching and Mission

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today, and forever is the author and finisher of the plan of salvation and the unchanging center and continual theme of Christian teaching. The early messengers set aside self-exaltation and proclaimed Him, His life and His saving work, rather than exalting themselves. His death on the cross teaches salvation and reveals the value of human souls. He is unchangeable and cannot err, so ministers are to seek wisdom and truth from Him rather than relying on human teachers or imitating them. The helpless soul can depend on Him rather than relying on or copying a human minister.

His instruction to His disciples on earth is the pattern for the teaching His servants give today, and His authority and power to direct His work endure. He promised to be with His followers as they teach and make disciples, and He works with them as they carry out His commission. He remains the same compassionate physician He was during His earthly ministry, still having healing power for every disease and restoring power for every infirmity. He has empowered His church to continue the work He did. After doing what can be done to relieve the sick and using the means provided for restoring health, people may entrust their patients to Him.

Though He no longer walks visibly among people, He remains the same compassionate Saviour still willing to hear the prayer of faith. Divine laws do not prevent God from answering prayer or acting supernaturally, and in answer to faithful prayer God may grant what He would not otherwise bestow. He is the truth, the pearl of great price, salvation itself and a treasure of enduring value bought by His blood. All may seek Him and find Him, and those who recognize His worth gladly give up everything to gain Him. He still lives and remains the same in His power and work as when He worked through the apostles.
