For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.
The world to come has not been put in subjection to angels. The world to come is heaven, where a rich reward is laid up for the saints and its joys can be tasted in advance. The world to come is the time when Christ receives the throne that is rightfully His and His kingdom is established. The throne of the Lord was removed from the earthly kingdom after Israel's rule was overturned, and it will be given to Christ at the end of this present world, when the world to come begins. Christ's kingdom is not of this present world but will be established after the final judgment, when His opponents are destroyed and the righteous receive their reward.
Connected with this is the testimony that man was made a little lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honor and set over the works of God's hands with all things put under his feet, though that complete subjection is not yet seen, because Jesus was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death and crowned with glory and honor to taste death for every person by the grace of God. That testimony about dominion and all things under him is spoken of Jesus, though its complete fulfillment is not yet visible. Jesus is the captain of salvation made perfect through sufferings in bringing many sons to glory.
The truth that the world to come is not under angels makes people accountable to God for the privileges of so great salvation. That salvation began to be spoken by the Lord, was confirmed by those who heard Him, and was witnessed by God with signs and wonders and miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit, and no one can escape if it is neglected, since every transgression of the steadfast word spoken by angels received just punishment. The ample provisions made through Christ give reason to hold fast to Him and give strength to encourage and help those who are failing.
Suffering is not proof that the sufferer has done wrong that calls for repentance. The verse calls every person to simplicity and true godliness in every place and every work, pressing close to Christ and willingly sharing His sufferings to be conformed to the image of Christ. A foretaste of the world to come spoils this world and places all affections, interests, and hopes in heaven. It creates longing to see the King in His beauty, gives a sense that heaven is near, makes Christ's appearing eagerly desired, and gives a good hope through Jesus Christ of immortality and eternal life.
