Hebrews 6:7

For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:

The earth drinks in the rain that comes often upon it and, when it brings forth useful herbs and plants for those by whom it is dressed and cultivated, receives blessing from God, teaching that what receives provision should produce fitting fruit. Drinking in the frequent rain pictures people drinking in the heaven-sent message of the righteousness of Christ, taking in the bread of life and grasping every morsel of spiritual meat with gladness and thankful hearts. The human mind is like earth or cultivated garden soil that drinks in rain and must be cultivated with regular care and learning to bring forth a useful crop and good growth.

When the elevating truths of the plan of salvation as revealed in Jesus Christ are sown and repeatedly received, the intellect is quickened and the mind expands and strengthens to take in and comprehend truth and other branches of knowledge, bringing forth fruit of a heavenly order that receives blessing from God. When the mind is left uncultivated in ignorance and exercised only upon commonplace, low, cheap ideas, it becomes dwarfed and enfeebled and overgrown with ignorance and other evils like unsightly weeds and thistles, and where seeds of truth are not sown there is no heavenly fruit. The abilities God gives bring a responsibility to cultivate them and use them for His glory.

Honest, useful work brings blessing from God like rain-watered ground yielding a useful crop for its cultivator, and no man or woman is degraded by honest toil, while idleness and selfish dependence degrade, foster self-indulgence, and make life empty and barren, a field open to every evil. The verse illustrates the value of bringing forth what is good, pictured as gathering flowers rather than thistles and thorns.
