Hebrews 8:11

And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

The promise belongs to the new covenant set forth in Hebrews 8:8-12. It is a universal call to every person, from the least to the greatest, to know the Lord personally for themselves. That covenant embraces both the white people and the colored people of the Southern States, who have souls to save and are not to be passed by.

Fulfilling that call includes helping those who lack education so they can read the Word of God for themselves. Those entrusted with the greatest advantages and richest blessings must not leave others behind as a helpless, dependent, degraded and unenlightened nation. Because the Lord is soon to come, work must be done now in the Southern field to teach a people ignorant and destitute that Christ is their Creator and Redeemer. When believers carry forward this teaching work with the Redeemer's self-sacrificing labor, the reproach of indolence and neglect is wiped away and the Spirit of God blesses the means employed.
