Mourning Priests Beside the Golden Calf on a Cartby emmanuel_higgins

Hosea 10:5

The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Beth-aven: for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the priests thereof that rejoiced on it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it.

The inhabitants of Samaria would be seized with fear because of the calves worshiped at Beth-aven. The very people of the calf, together with its idolatrous priests who had rejoiced over it, would mourn over it when its glory departed and it was taken away from them. The calf itself would be carried off to Assyria as a gift and tribute present to King Jareb. Its removal to a foreign power would expose the defeat and captivity that must follow Israel's persistent idolatry.
