Hosea 11:2

As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.

The more God called Israel, the more the people went away from Him. Although He called them, they turned away from Him when called. Their going away meant sacrificing unto Baalim and burning incense to graven or carved images, worshiping Baal and idols. This was rejection of the Lord who had loved, taught, cared for, and healed them, with loving care, teaching, and healing continued toward them despite their rejection.

They failed to recognize the advantages He had given them. They were bent on backsliding and would not honor Him. Their idolatry led them to abandon every principle that uplifts and ennobles. What the verse describes also applies in the present day, for as God calls His people now they turn away from Him as Israel did.
