Hosea 11:5

He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.

The verse foretells the coming captivity of the tribes, in which the Assyrian will rule over them as their king. It declares that they will not go back into the land of Egypt, warning them against seeking an alliance with Egypt. The cause given for this Assyrian rule is that they refused to return to God.

The verse stands among God's wonderful lessons and mighty appeals to His backslidden children who had mixed themselves among the people. By shallow and unconsecrated work they had begotten strange children who fell before temptation as dew before the morning sun, and they fed on wind instead of feeding upon God. To those thus addressed God had multiplied prophets and visions, though prophets were unheeded and visions disregarded, yet He pleads with them to come, promising to heal their backsliding and love them freely and to make their roots strike deep so that they grow as the cedars of Lebanon and blossom as the lily, for the ways of Jehovah are right.
