When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died.
When Ephraim spoke with trembling, in humility and reverence, he was exalted to prominence and honor in Israel. He once held that honored place among the tribes, raised up because he spoke humbly and with a sense of dependence. When he offended by sinning through Baal worship and idolatry, he fell, came to ruin, and died. His former exaltation was contrasted with the ruin that followed, for turning to Baal brought his death.
The verse warns that pride, self-exaltation, unfaithfulness, apostasy, and turning from God lead to downfall, ruin, and death. Humility gives way to ruin when self-exaltation takes its place, and unfaithfulness to God brings downfall. True exaltation comes through fearing God and obeying His word, while seeking worldly power and honor through idolatry leads to ruin. A humble spirit with willingness to unite with others is the way to receive God's help, and it makes a person teachable and useful to God in service that honors Him. Humility before God is the path to service that honors Him, rather than pride and self-seeking.
Applied to a minister, humility and reverence before God must not give way to self-exaltation and idolatry. Self-sufficiency, domineering authority, and self-appointed praise or censure show he is no longer working under the Lord's control. Genuine humility comes from a cleansed, sanctified heart and appears in gracious words and a spirit shaped by Christ's life. Those who recognize their dependence on Christ receive the Holy Spirit and God's love.
