Hosea 4:12

My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.

Hosea 4:12 teaches that turning away from God to false sources of counsel brings spiritual unfaithfulness and causes people to err. To ask counsel at stocks and to let a staff declare the course is to abandon the living God for lifeless and human guides. Its warning applies directly to those who accept the counsel of priests and human lawmakers instead of obeying God's law. By following such human authority they are misled into setting aside the Sabbath, which is God's memorial of creation.
