Hosea Pulling a Stubborn Heifer Toward a Shrineby emmanuel_higgins

Hosea 4:16

For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place.

Israel turned away from God in persistent backsliding, a continuing pattern of disobedience in which the nation sank deeper into apostasy despite repeated warnings and appeals. The turning was not a single lapse but a settled habit of sliding back from loyalty to rebellion.

The same backsliding appears in those who trample upon God's law by making human laws and devising and counseling and planning to force the people to accept them. They argue that because the whole world keeps Sunday, the few in number should obey the laws of the land. Such a course reveals blindness by error in taking words from the lips of priests and human lawmakers. It supposes it does not matter if God's law is not kept, though that law was instituted in Eden when the foundations of the earth were laid. It was given as God's memorial to honor the living God who made the world in six days and sanctified and blessed the day of His rest.
