Hosea 5:7
They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions. They have dealt treacherously against the LORD: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions.
The charge of dealing treacherously against the Lord is directed to the rulers of the ten tribes during the violent final years of the kingdom. The disloyal offspring produced by that treachery are apparent but counterfeit conversions, promoted by Satan, that look like blessing and revival without God being present. Joined to the preceding verse, the verse teaches that the Lord withdraws Himself and changes His position toward such a people. They may then seek Him with many meetings, fervent prayer and exhortation, house-to-house visiting, and penitents coming forward, yet not find Him.
Religious excitement therefore does not prove that God is with the movement; the test is to wait and observe the result. As part of calls for the ten tribes to repent, the verse warns that if they continue in transgression, devouring destruction will come upon the people together with their portions or possessions. Within a month means that in a short time they and their portions will be consumed when hidden fraud, theft, and hypocrisy are exposed and make the treachery plain. The predicted disaster was fulfilled in destruction and captivity, connected with the overthrow of Samaria.
