Hosea 5:9

Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of rebuke: among the tribes of Israel have I made known that which shall surely be.

Hosea was the first of the minor prophets and the last great prophet of the northern kingdom, and his name means salvation. He lived about two hundred years before Daniel and was contemporary with Isaiah. He prophesied during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah in Judah and of Jeroboam II in Israel.

With great definiteness it is made known among the tribes of Israel that Ephraim, the northern kingdom of Israel, shall be made desolate and taken into captivity in the day of rebuke. This desolation is the due result of the moral condition set forth in the book, for people, priests, and princes were all guilty of gross iniquity. The prophecy also warns the people against wicked alliances. Beyond this apostasy and desolation, the message looks forward to the time when the Lord shall restore His people.
