Hosea 6:3
Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth. Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
In Israel's apostasy and suffering under punishment, it calls for return to God with promise of revival, healing and restoration to those who turn back. His going forth to help His people is prepared and sure and welcome as the breaking of morning. He comes to them as the former and latter rain to the earth, sure and refreshing and life-giving to bring renewal and growth. Following on to know Him means a continuing lifelong day-by-day seeking, obeying and holding to Him, and those who keep following will come to know Him. That knowledge comes gradually like dawn increasing to full day, as greater light is given to those who walk in the light already received. The rain is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, given as the former rain at the opening of the gospel to bring up the seed and as the more abundant latter rain at its close to ripen the harvest.
Words and Historical Setting
In Israel's apostasy and sin, after being torn and smitten and under punishment and suffering, the call is to return to God with promise of revival and healing and binding up and restoration to those who turn back and keep seeking to know Him, by awaking out of sleep, diligently searching and studying His Word to know and do His will, calling on Him in great necessity, and showing repentance that puts away selfishness and covetousness and anger and unchristlike deeds. His coming to restore His people is as sure as the morning and life-giving like rain, including the early and latter rains that nourish the earth, giving revival and blessing like the seasonal rains to rebellious people who return.
His going forth and coming to His people to help is prepared and sure and certain and dependable and clear and timely and welcome and regular as the morning and dawn, compared to the reliable arrival of morning and to rain that renews the earth, with certainty and renewal for those who continue to seek Him and continually seek growth. The surrounding call applies to those who oppose God's will that they must turn to Him, because their actions go before them into judgment and each person will stand or fall individually.
He shall come to His people as the rain, as the latter and former rain to the earth, sure and refreshing and life-giving, bringing renewal and refreshment and blessing and growth and restoration, watering the earth and nourishing it and renewing it. The rain is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, with the former rain at the opening of the gospel causing the seed to spring up and to growth, and the latter rain at its close more abundant to ripen the harvest for the final warning under the third angel and the mighty movement of the last message.
His coming is like the quiet and gentle arrival of morning and daylight breaking over the earth, which dispels darkness and awakens the world to life and brings life. As the Sun of Righteousness He arises not in dazzling outward splendor but to bring healing to those who live in the shadow of death.
The morning image points to Christ as the Sun of Righteousness whose glory shines with continually increasing glory, like dawn growing brighter until the sun is fully risen and shines in full glory toward noon. His coming and presence are like morning light shining as the way and the truth and the life in the Old Testament just as in the New, so the Old Testament is not merely moonlight beside the New Testament's sunlight, and His instruction to Israel at Sinai is the same powerful light as His teaching when He came in person, with all His words true. Continuing to know the Lord brings this increasing light toward full day and is linked with receiving the promised gift of everlasting life, and God's people are to keep receiving rather than be satisfied with little until established and strengthened and settled and reflecting His glory.
His going forth is precious light shining upon God's commandment-loving people, revealing thoughts of mercy toward them even while Satan meditates their destruction and proving the church is the special object of His care and love, so those who know the Lord should sound no doleful note but talk faith and always talk hope and courage. His advance is sure and bright like sunrise, seen in evangelistic work that bears the divine credentials under the witness of the Holy Spirit, and the success of meetings shows the Lord's work going forth as sure as the morning. When the word of truth makes a deep impression, those who receive it acknowledge convictions, determine to leave sinful life, take stand to obey requirements, speak and pray in social meetings, turn from sin, and then do a more persuasive work in leading others to be reconciled to God, a work to be expected in many places.
His coming is as sure and welcome and refreshing and dawning-bright and certain and clear and renewing as the morning and as life-giving as rain, bringing spiritual quickening and strength and presence and rich blessings and help to His people. Growing in grace and knowledge of the truth and contemplating Christ by faith bring a foretaste of heavenly joy, and continuing in faith and hope to know the Lord brings His presence, with strengthening and healing to those who walk humbly with Him when His people take stand with Him rather than relying on human power or influence.
Meaning of Following On
Following on to know the Lord is a continuing, lifelong, day-by-day pursuit, and those who keep seeking, following and obeying will come to know Him, walking in the light, in ongoing communion, in sanctification which unlike instant justification is the work of a lifetime today and tomorrow as reception of the Holy Spirit, in obedience to the Word that keeps from stumbling and prepares for the great day of God, with confidence in His prepared way that opens and strengthens for duty when prayer brings promises to Him with thanksgiving, and in daily study following its light toward growing knowledge sure as the morning.
Following on means trusting God, keeping living connection, denying self, taking the cross and following Christ, allowing no side issues into selfish paths, giving the life wholly to Jesus in receiving and obeying, abiding in Christ to grow stronger, overcoming sin, temper and wrong dispositions through Christ's blood and the testimony of His Word, linking the soul to Christ and leaning incessantly upon Him, cut loose from world, follies, enchantments and provision for the flesh, not looking back nor swerving to Satan's side, entering the Holiest by the blood of Jesus and laying hold of hope with believing, working, praying, watching, waiting, watchfulness and stern conflict against unseen foes, by which earnest sanctified zeal increases, selfishness is purified, influence for good is gained in apostasy, conquerors are made in warfare against sin with Jesus as helper, and readiness is kept for Christ's return in glory as the only way to heaven.
Following on means hearing His voice and following daily by asking what must be done to be saved and obeying requirements to the letter even when they cut across human devisings, appetite, calculations, practices and habits, living in constant communion with the mind and will of Jesus as practical self-denying Christians, taking His Word into mind and heart under discipline and departing from iniquity into right relation to God, denying self and taking up the cross daily rather than holding a stereotyped position, which leads into advanced purifying reforms instead of vindicating own habits.
Following on means not stopping at the halfway house or at the beginning of Christian life nor dwelling on grief but consenting to the Spirit's operation, learning trust through trials and responding to divine love until becoming an overcomer, knowing He loves and asks only response, that He is goodness and truth who does not willingly grieve or afflict, calling soul and all within to bless His holy name, with certainty that the Lord works with the tried one to complete the experience and that His coming is sure and welcome as the morning.
Knowing Him comes by awaking out of sleep, diligently searching and studying the Word to know and do His will, appropriating its promises and following its light, calling on Him in necessity, turning and drawing near with humble confession, and repentance that puts away selfishness, covetousness, anger and unchristlike deeds and blends institutional interests in heaven-born righteousness, receiving His Word as bread for spiritual strength into closer communion with its Originator, learning truth and refusing error before too late, persistently seeking and following His will and teaching truth to others with prospered work, for turning to Him brings His near coming sure as dawn and refreshing as rain.
It calls for persistent earnest effort essential to deeper experience, triumph over sin, and daily knowledge of His will and ways, joined with self-denial, willing glad wholehearted service without half-hearted questioning of outcome or yield, humble submission in words and deeds through daily converting grace and the Holy Spirit, and readiness for His coming, rather than abandoning responsibility or exalting self, actively responding to follow Christ in daily life that shapes eternal destiny and grows into Christlikeness through faith, service and work for others' salvation.
It means following in purity and holiness as the Spirit leads to Christ, receiving God's righteousness and peace under Christ as ruler, walking uprightly in obedience and standing firm in Christ on the safe path to heaven, which brings purity, an undefiled life, daily divine knowledge and spiritual strength by following Christ's example and looking to Jesus for saving power as acts of faith.
It calls for giving up entrenched practices, habits, sin, own will and any course unfit for heaven, laying aside garments of self-righteousness, humbling the heart and consecrating self to a spotless life without wrinkle to stand the judgment test before the Son in His kingdom, to be done now because probation is short and limited to make calling and election sure and get ready to meet the King in His beauty, walking in the light as Christ is in the light lest without following there be disunion, blindness and stumbling, with faithfulness to given light bringing increased light and stability and clearer insight holding under all circumstances through entire surrender in heart, soul and strength as only safety from coming short of grace.
It means trusting God rather than human powers and taking hold of Him so He works for His people, remaining distinct from the world whatever the consequences, depending wholly on Him and walking in His counsel and light amid pressures and snares of the enemy which God overrules, looking to Him and inquiring in faith and learning His providence under His own jurisdiction rather than depending on leading men for approval for any important move.
Knowing is linked with humility and a contrite spirit, belonging to every soul who lives in humility and meekness before Him and pledges to God, heeding messages that encourage and point out dangers and mistakes, with careful conduct and distrust of self, seeking truth as hidden treasure with whom God dwells to revive humble spirit and contrite heart unto perfection of character, made possible by large measure of the Holy Spirit in answer to prayer with strength given and coming certain as dawning-bright morning.
Following on is done by full consecration and copying Christ as the pattern, staying in right relation to God and right position before Him, learning from the Word what He wants done and searching it constantly without carelessness as daily students following its light, feeding the mind, digging as hidden treasure, growing in ability, comprehension and character expressed in words, deportment and temper, learning Christ's meek lowly way, returning in acceptable service and hungering for righteousness into new living experience and rest, studying what Christ has been and done through ages and gathering evidence from patriarchs, prophets and apostles unto stronger faith that He can keep the trusting, and if a person searches with an anxious inquiring heart hungering for righteousness with open mind tendered by the Spirit, the Spirit as divine teacher gives true meaning plainer than learned intricate interpretations so even a novice need not err but taught of God finds eternal life, praying to the fountain of wisdom, cherishing every ray, discerning every duty with going forth certain as morning, sensing heavenly intelligences, walking and working intelligently, knowing aright which is everlasting life.
Following on requires decided effort with full purpose of heart, consecrating heart and life to God, encouraging one another, seeking now without delay as pledge to advance heavenward, pressing the battle to the gates and pressing back darkness toward light until victories are gained and preparation is made for the mansions Christ has gone to prepare, giving life and strength to God's honor and others' blessing in full stand on the Lord's side, valuing eternal life above all to win heaven at loss of all with not a minute to lose in harmonious family pledge for entrance, for which God imparts strength beyond human weakness and angels work with light shining into heart and mind, unto overcomer's reward through the Lamb's blood and testimony, welcome at city gates with crown and harp saved eternally, requiring deeper experience than yet obtained with constant watchfulness, daily reconversion, wholly sanctified traits and purified powers trained for service to triumph over sin and stand faultless for soon return, since continuing mistakes hinder divine life.
Following on is wisdom and the best worthwhile course, meaning reasoning from the Word and being blessed by what is found there, putting away foolishness and serving Him with heart and soul and voice, entering friendship with Jesus Christ who died a most cruel death though Pilate found no fault in Him, embracing His religion without fear of being worse off, helping God's work and accepting suffering when souls are gathered, for which He gives His working, intelligence and grace and knowledge of the power of His resurrection.
Following on means refusing to be satisfied with a half experience or a mere name and refusing a loose lax spirit, but deciding for every ray of light and loving the light and coming to it even when it reproves deeds, living as Christ's purchased property with no liberty to do as one pleases, honoring God who gave His Son to the cross by living faith taking Him at His word, giving heart to Christ, suffering for Him, grasping promises and carrying out truth and righteousness, for promised knowing is full experience not few streaks, while unbelief and tolerated wrongdoing forfeit it and shame Christ, and those who refuse lest deeds be reproved and insist on their own way will not follow on, whereas deciding for every ray brings lesser beams increasing to greater light with path prepared as morning.
Following on means taking hold by faith in Jesus Christ, not by feeling, of strengthening power for the inner man by His Spirit so Christ dwells in the heart, the mind is drawn to God and heaven, and His righteousness and truth are wrought in the life, prevailing as Israel prevailed when Moses lifted up his hands unto living experience sure as morning, trusting step by step with assurance He will not forsake but remain Helper, holding promises even when feelings fail, laying hold to carry out Word principles with strength, grace and power surely given, for the Lord knows each person and character how to deal with each one as people do not know themselves, and discerning Christ brings comfort, courage and hope through daily trust.
Following is an earnest desire God approves when people come intelligently before Him where they can understand the movings of the Spirit and know God is dealing with them, taking God at His word and casting the helpless soul upon Christ in humble simplicity to receive light and grace and power to overcome inner evils and then help and communicate to others, strengthened, blessed and established so counter influences are not stocked nor felt from those not given up, standing in moral independence with mind molded only by the Holy Spirit, not imitating any man nor diverted by human influence or opposition from plain duty step by step for themselves.
Following means advancing in experimental knowledge of God as revealed in Christ, and the more one contemplates God the more one sees weakness and sinfulness and lays hold on Christ as personal Saviour with grace and peace multiplied and appearing sure as morning, increasing capacity to receive, appreciate, understand truth as in Jesus and obey it by yielding, responding, humbly receiving, accepting Christ's yoke and willing God's will unto experimental knowledge of gospel power and better understanding of Christ each step, giving personal experiential knowledge of righteousness through obedience and rebirth by the Word, certain and progressive as the Spirit revives the constantly searching soul to comprehend truth in Jesus not human wisdom.
If we follow on, God's blessing will rest upon us as we pray, love the beauty of Christ's character given to the world, follow Him in every particular, glorifying and praising God, studying His virtues to become like Him, carrying out directions in minor points for strength in large matters and bringing truth into every purpose and action, faithfully using opportunities and abilities and doing what His Word says and seeking wisdom, reaching higher standard, letting heaven's light into mind, walking daily, giving cares, testing Him to prove His Word, glorifying God in home and giving more time to study weighed sensibly, for as people advance in faith and obedience God fulfills promises, opens the way, strengthens for duty, and answers prayer, and this promise of light and power sure and welcome as morning with daily growth in grace may be claimed while mercy lingers and way remains open by earnest effort and faith.
Each new measure of light should be received with gratitude and followed with trust that more will come, advancing in the light of the Word and counsel steadily like gradual dawn not suddenly blocking another's path, without insisting own way is right but humbly wholeheartedly seeking so He blesses use of given light, helps reflect it in difficulty and prepares for responsibility, for advancing step by step in obedience brings proof by experience with clearer light ready for all who follow Christ the Light, taking His yoke with full determination unto healthy symmetrical experience hidden with Christ, working sermon principles in business, renouncing deceit and fraud, circulating money, trading on talents as heavenly family adopted to act as Christ acted, and following to best ability prepares way with guidance by the great Teacher in right lines receiving light from Christ.
Knowing comes by pressing on step by step, receiving advancing light, bearing tests and lifting the cross directly in pathway, tested and tried until truth becomes reality by genuine living experience, as from the rise of the third angel's message where those led advanced point by point and truth went in bright warm rays worldwide as testing truth to all to whom it is proclaimed by delegated messengers, with which true workers cooperate accepting truth as given to those students of prophecy.
Following is made possible because God gave His Son, and through Christ people can know the Lord by studying the Word to become acquainted with Christ's earthly experiences and understand salvation's terms, following His lacking-in-nothing example and appreciating advantages exalting God's riches and grace, diligently studying prophecies and searching Scriptures where His character appears in infinite perfection as center of hope, eternal life to eaters of flesh and drinkers of blood, healer of serpent's sting to lookers, Sin-bearer and only remedy by beholding whom sinners are changed, with nothing interposed, faith, love and adoration growing, opening large field for possessors of richest treasures.
Knowing comes when He lets His light shine into the heart, as sure as the morning, and the verse is a hope to pray for relatives that their hearts will be lightened so they shall know the Lord.
Knowing requires a continuing day-by-day pursuit in which faith must increase and holiness enter the life, following day by day and not stopping when first believing or beginning to follow; otherwise freshness and power of first love disappears and ground is lost, while keeping on quickens understanding and grows character especially at home and in the church, taking each day's opportunities to represent Christ, sharing His sufferings with burdens for souls, bringing ongoing development, increasing faith and growing experience as truth in Jesus is followed, unto preparation to stand among redeemed at Christ's coming whose work is sure as morning.
Knowing requires following on without stopping, as probationers in school who are diligent students walking in the light as Christ is in the light; by walking in the light we learn of God and to know God in His works is true science, which knowing is life eternal, gained by honesty, industry, care of the body and applying every power of mind to spiritual knowledge unto completeness in Christ the perfect pattern, through combined natural and spiritual study where earth-obeyed laws reveal infinite mastery with same principles in spiritual and natural, bringing clearer sight than now discerned as teachers and students study Bible alone, hear nature's voice and open Scriptures to schools gradually without rapid unprepared changes, requiring baptism of the Holy Spirit lest minds misinterpret and bring confusion instead of light, calling for patience not rushing changes before ready.
Following means not refusing to enter the strait gate because the whole path to Paradise cannot be seen, but receiving the first ray sent and walking in it by bringing actions into harmony with God's Word without waiting for every doubt removed or mystery solved, and those who do will receive more light shining brighter unto the perfect day with the path illuminated as they advance.
The verse expresses longing to keep seeking with confidence His coming is as sure as the morning, joined to lips speaking right words, God-centered meditations, genuine simple trustful faith without presumption or self-confidence, reliance wholly on promise, and asking Him to keep lips from evil and tongue from guile, sought even in pain, restlessness and sleeplessness with earnest prayer for comfort, peace only Jesus gives and self-control with complete distrust of self.
Those who cooperate with Christ by constant Bible study and by putting into use and imparting gained knowledge will know the certainty of His going forth, which solidifies faith for trial, builds on true knowledge not vague sentiments, increases ability to work and represent Christ, confirms in knowledge, fills the mind as they eat His words with precious truths, strengthens by practical service, enables proof of Christ's fullness of grace and love to unbelievers, makes complete in Him, educates by prayer and soul hunger, and fits them to lead and teach others and supply needs from experience.
Seeing His going forth depends on following on, and those who do not keep following will never see it, requiring urgent preparation now because the Lord is at the door for the Marriage Supper of the Lamb and no one knows how soon accounts will be settled and life work ended, meaning being doers of His words, pure, loyal and true to highest interests with character molded after the divine similitude in love and tenderness rather than mere claim.
Following means following in Christ's footsteps, drawn by His all-satisfying attractions and beseeching wooing sympathy and love, reading through Him title to an incorruptible undefiled unfading inheritance and seeing His grace all-sufficient; His going forth is known progressively as faith and confidence increase with exercise, barriers and satanic obstacles are pressed against and wrestled through, the way opens with fresh heavenly incentives and faith confirmed by looking on Christ, living out Bible truth expanding growth and invigorating virtue, and truth abiding in the heart sanctifies, animates, encourages, impels, constrains and binds the willing soul with life hid with Christ in God, making God's love abiding power with ever more decided influence on self and associates, learned as daily lessons by all including elders and deacons into example instructing others.
Those who keep following receive an everlasting inheritance, with more religion, humility and meekness as they lay hold of the Mighty One, making Him everything so His power, grace and godliness work and fit teachers of youth to keep heavenly agencies awake for influence; following is daily conversion needed to meet powers of darkness and never fall, requiring constant watchfulness, daily reconversion, sanctified traits and purified powers trained for service to triumph over sin and stand faultless for soon return, with continuing mistakes costly to divine progress, demanding earnest determined pressing forward especially by responsible workers realizing the times in decided stand, consecration and co-labor with God unto deeper experience.
After the soul is consecrated and entrusted to the One who purchased its freedom, the believer follows on to know Him and His ways sure like the morning, belonging to the Christian's work of willing and doing in close union with Christ and a surrendered life with continuing day-by-day effort.
If sinners surrender to Jesus and open the heart's door they will be kept safe and possess truth because they possess Jesus, and if they follow on they will gain certain knowledge and be complete in Him.
Knowing comes only by continually advancing and never standing still, with hearts open to receive every ray according to ability so receiving light gives capacity for more; when light has grown dim and zeal diminished by yielding to outward influences Satan uses to nullify truth, pressing forward restores certainty as sure as dawn, as people study His revelation in providences from creation to the present which leads in holiness, peace and rest and enables earthly church to cooperate with heavenly as educating power.
All through the Bible God calls His people to follow, adding grace to grace and acting out Scripture while washed in the Lamb's blood, standing in righteousness and truth today to stand when every case is decided and books are opened and be ready for transfer to God's city, holding to promises and seeking eternal life with no backward steps, no questioning frame, learning and living 2 Peter 1, taking every forward step rejoicing, holding fast as overcomers with light constantly given while daily overcoming and cooperating even unto accidental death, a promise to be read with prayer to children, families and neighbors to hide in Christ and turn from temptation doing Christ's work.
Day by day following and walking with Him takes place by holding to Jesus as Mediator, entering God's presence through His blood, trusting His atoning sacrifice and merits, and being led by His Spirit, and as hold is kept on Christ people come nearer to God.
Following on means looking to Jesus daily, trusting wholly without wavering and learning from Him rather than relying on human wisdom or own guidance, and He teaches and gives light leading away from darkness toward sound decisions and straight paths, lived through faithful ordinary duties blessing others in purity, integrity and thoroughness unto rich experience.
Everyone is commanded to follow on with the privilege of knowing Him by honoring Him through obeying His requirements rather than dishonoring Him by looseness and laxness, requiring reformation, deep heart-searching and reconversion for many professing truth with no mistake where eternal interests lie, following and obeying Christ and being fitted for the kingdom He is fitting, so as to be prepared to meet Him at His coming in judgment saying this is our God for whom we waited.
Following on means seeking to know Him more perfectly, bound together by love for Christ in united sentiment and action, receiving brightness, comfort and peace, joined with faithful witness while making God the source of wisdom and diligently acquiring spiritual knowledge, whose work is known as surely as morning comes.
Continuing to follow on by confessing sin, making Christ the best friend, and being taught and led by God with a pleasant disposition free from passion gives certainty His appearing is as sure as dawn and fits to meet Him in peace welcoming Him as waited-for Saviour, and means accepting Jesus as abiding living Saviour and hiding in Christ with Christ abiding within, forming character for eternal happiness and immortal life through present test with daily victory and steady action honoring Him instead of mountaintop and valley extremes of scolding and fretting when things go wrong.
Continuing to seek brings assurance His coming and help are as sure as the morning, involving renewed conversion and sanctification, wholehearted seeking, praise that glorifies God, and bearing fruit by working for others' salvation.
Continuing to know the Lord is done by an individual work in union with Christ, putting on Christ and His qualities and representing Him in all words and actions, walking in humility and being taught daily, so willingness allows the Spirit to work through believers to represent a better way with power to the world.
Knowing Him aright is life eternal, and the verse applies to relying on the Lord for guidance and light, living in harmony with His will and continuing to seek faithfully rather than neglecting duty.
Following on is learned in the school of Christ by separating from vanities and pleasures of sin and choosing humble obedience through accepting Jesus as Saviour who cleanses and imparts grace to continue knowing, and children can learn this now better than at any later period.
Following on requires a daily individual steady pursuit rather than turning aside to easier congenial ways, though the Lord has worked for His people, gained through stern guardianship over self and a humble meek lowly spirit caring less for show than for an abiding Christ, bringing real results with God present, lasting fruit, firm standing on the eternal Rock and advance unto eternal life without shifting change.
Gradual Growing Knowledge
Knowledge of God and His truth comes gradually like the dawn, first dim and then increasing in brightness until the full light of noonday and the perfect day, and walking in the light already given brings still greater light. Continuing to seek by following on brings continual advancement in knowing, with understanding increasing like morning light growing brighter toward noon until it shines in glorious splendor. Full divine glory shining at once could not be endured, so the light first breaks dim and then increases toward full day. Advancing heavenward brings more glorious light, richer blessings and precious truth with greater knowledge of God and heaven, but stepping back into the world and earthly gratifications leaves people unprepared so that the light that would have come cannot come.
Divine agency works together with human agency to give ever-increasing, clearer light, so that accepting one ray prepares the way for another to come like gleamings of dawn until it shines brighter and brighter to the brightness of the sun at noonday. In all ages the doctrines of grace are gradually unfolded to human comprehension, with the treasures of truth present in the Word but seen and comprehended only by those who search after truth, moving from obscurity of dawn to radiance of noonday. Following on makes minds more susceptible to truth, giving clearer perceptions enriched by the application of truth. It is a gradual day-by-day work like leaven, with truth renewed daily until light breaks in the heart and life moves onward from strength to greater strength.
The growing knowledge begins like the first light of dawn and advances toward full day, like dawn growing brighter until the sun is fully risen and toward noon, which is mature and complete gospel faith and the full stature of Christ, with doctrines gradually unfolded. After confessing and repenting of sin and receiving pardon, people keep learning of Christ until they reach that full light of a perfect gospel faith, with praise of God in the heart showing itself in the face and preparing a person to honor the Lord wherever they serve. Satan's power is wholly destructive while God's power is constructive, so His kingdom is one of continual progress. Keeping on brings growing knowledge, for the going forth is prepared as the morning, like the sun rising with mild beams in the east and steadily increasing in strength until the perfect day, calling for sharp watchfulness unto prayer and earnest, zealous effort to secure the pearl of great price, to be personally and intensely interested in precious truth, and not to listen with weariness or listlessness while eternal destiny is being decided.
The preparation of the morning does not blaze in all at once but comes gradually until the sun shines out in its beauty, so knowledge comes little by little to those who keep following. Those who follow on increase continually in light and knowledge, and the coming is as sure and dependable as the morning. Knowing is a progressive work of sanctification that takes a lifetime and must go forward every day. The going forth prepared as the morning means light is kept in reserve, and as people follow on by sowing the fruits of the Spirit of Christ in character they understand more and more of that reserved light. Unlike justification by faith in a risen, ascended Saviour who can do His work in an instant, sanctification is following on today and tomorrow until it is known that the going forth is prepared as the morning, which following is the reception of the Holy Spirit, which is to know God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent, giving a genuine experience.
As morning brightens until the sun shines in full glory, the Son of Righteousness shines with continually increasing glory. God's people are to keep receiving this light rather than be satisfied with little, until they are established, strengthened, and settled, and they reflect His glory. As people advance with Jesus and search the Scriptures, they receive increasing light and must walk in it, just as earlier generations were faithful to the light given to them.
Certainty and Blessings Given
To keep following on to know the Lord is to come to know Him with sure, living, experiential certainty, learning from Jesus, abiding in Him, beholding His character and expressing His love in mercy, until beholders are changed into His image with ever-increasing beauty. His coming to restore, revive and renew is as sure as the morning and as life-giving as rain, even the former rain that brings up the seed at the opening of the gospel and the latter rain that ripens the harvest at its close under the final warning of the third angel. That increasing understanding comes like morning light growing brighter toward noon and unto the perfect day.
It brings increasing light that reveals truth as it is in Jesus, dispels moral darkness, improves heart and character, and leads to growth in grace, clearer sight of imperfections, and daily sanctification by the Spirit through truth. Experience is to grow progressively like the early sun growing a little stronger and brighter until full day, until observers see the Spirit directing words and actions in excellent work for God. That knowledge is to shape character, words and conduct so others see the person has been with Jesus and learned from Him, making Christ's love visible to draw people.
Continued seeking brings everlasting life and eternal happiness, yet not all at once, but as seekers depend on God and take hold of divine power. God gives peace day by day, directs and steadies steps, sanctifies and elevates abilities, and faith looks to an everlasting home free from sorrow, a life measuring with the life of God by acquaintance with a crucified and risen Saviour. To know Him aright in full consecration, copying Christ as pattern, feeding the mind daily on Scripture dug as hidden treasure, and growing in ability, comprehension, deportment, temper and character, is everlasting life and entrance into the royal family.
Following on strengthens to meet the enemy and resist temptation, giving sure help as certain and prepared as the morning. Those who choose Christ, trust Him and ask for spiritual and physical strength are never forsaken but sustained even in lifelong affliction, sickness, old age, weakness and coming trials to endure and labor for souls, with strength given for each new experience while holding firmly to the Word and living righteously. When faith is tested and the soul faints, believers are to keep faith and follow on, and when mysteries are not clear at first they are to walk by faith until events unfold and give understanding hearts.
It is the privilege of becoming a child of God with deep living experience and living connection with the great Source of light through Bible study, where the Spirit impresses truth on the humble teachable soul and removes uncertainty and questioning doubt. It turns from a pleasure-seeking life, refuses temptation and the uncertain path to darkness and unbelief, and individually chooses to serve God. It steadily perfects Christian experience from first rays to full day like the prepared dawn growing gradually, calling for careful faithful progress rather than careless living.
That progress means giving up one's own way for Christ's way in meekness and cheerfully taking His yoke, with angels beside every effort against wrong and Christ giving daily strength to overcome, leading to meeting in the kingdom saved eternally after fighting the good fight and pressing the battle to the gates. With full determination to obey, the life becomes healthy and symmetrical, hidden with Christ in God, working out sermon on the mount principles in business, renouncing deceitful weights and fraud, using money in circulation, trading on God-given talents as part of the heavenly family. Experience grows more and more, brighter and brighter, calling for seeking God now for power, grace and wisdom, and for parents to put away passion and give children an example of discipleship.
Seeking Him leads to knowing the beauty of His character and recognizing His goodness, mercy and compassion in a connection He acknowledges, expressed in pure and undefiled religion. Knowing includes learning Christ's lessons, submitting to His will, and knowing free complete forgiveness through Christ wounded for transgressions and bruised for iniquities. That growing knowledge is revealed in lives marked by Christ's joy and peace, brightness, comfort and peace, for His joy remains in the Christian who walks in His footsteps.
Continuing to know the Lord and make Him known brings daily growth in which faith with active work makes experience more fervent, assured and satisfying while unbelief disappears. As people continue learning they can lead others to the living word so they too know His coming is as sure and clear as the morning. As parents learn truth with children and work for their spiritual growth, unbelief gives way to faith and activity, assurance deepens, prayer becomes earnest, and parents themselves grow while gathering heaven's light to share in the home.
This continuing knowledge is joined to conversion, overcoming, decisive conversion, and readiness for Christ's return. The path grows brighter, conversion becomes more decided, growth proceeds toward the full stature of Christ with grace to bless others by example, and daily pursuit quickens understanding to prepare character to stand among the redeemed when Christ comes. Looking heavenward in faith rather than dwelling on earthly troubles supports this renewal, giving courage instead of discouragement and steadily increasing brightness, courage and faith with Jesus as present help in every need.
The path of obedience is the path to heaven, and those who walk uprightly and keep God's law in the heart stand firm in Christ with steady growth in spirituality, righteousness and sanctification and every ability made more useful. Doing what is right and practicing truth even at cost of self-denial and sacrifice is the way of following on, bringing through the Spirit true understanding of Scripture with assurance and confidence. When the heart is fixed on Christ and opened to the Holy Spirit, He comes as rain that sustains spiritual growth as rain sustains a plant.
Christ comes to those who keep minds stayed on Him as rain comes to earth, the Holy Spirit received for growth, bringing increase of faith and sanctified character making words and actions more like His. Following brings the heart into full harmony with Christ and intelligent knowledge of His work and what He will do, needed for coming trials and persecutions, with continual increase of light as when Christ reflected light on the people when His departure was near. Walking in His footsteps brings assured knowledge of the certainty of His coming, with Christ looking on in love as believers preserve unity without division and pray together laying hold on God.
Continuing to press on means reaching a higher standard, letting heaven's light shine into the mind, walking daily with Him, giving Him cares, testing Him so He proves His Word, glorifying God in the home, and giving more time to studying His Word with sensible thorough weighing. It brings better understanding of the Master, which is growing up in grace into Christ as living Head, a pursuit to be held even at loss of all things for heaven's sake. It gives more strength and puts people on much higher ground by loving Him supremely and neighbor as self, learning in Christ's school kindness and skillful dealing instead of oppression before being prepared for heaven.
Following on through consecration brings people to know their place and fulfill individual responsibilities. God will help those who follow on, and committing to follow His ways brings peace to the heart and heaven's light to the mind, with faith secure in perilous times by holding to God's Word rather than human assertions. It means receiving Christ and trusting Him as personal Saviour, while God by grace changes followers day by day and calls them to perfection, His work continuing until Christ's second appearing.
Eternal life will be ours if we follow on by doing our best, walking humbly, leaning on a mighty arm, relying on Christ's strength so God is not dishonored, and manifesting under every test while on trial for life that we are on the Lord's side. Christian experience rises and increases in warmth, light and power like the morning rather than fading like the setting sun, growing through fellowship and reliance in preparation for Christ's coming. As morning light grows ever brighter, those who feed on the Word and remain susceptible to the Spirit receive life and energy, comprehend more of the Saviour's glory, reflect His likeness with increasing beauty, and are comforted and sustained by grace in the race for eternal life.
Knowing is an ongoing advance in grace pursued diligently in divine strength, with the path growing brighter. It leads to growth in faith, love and meekness as believers follow Christ's self-denial and strive to overcome through faith in God and His Word. It saves one's own soul and gives converting power to win souls by example, as older children lead younger ones rightly and speak timely words, overcoming evil thoughts as laborers together with God.
Angels are beside those who give up their own way, seeing every effort and difficulty and giving daily strength to overcome and gather into the kingdom eternally. As people trust He will prepare the way like the morning, they are to pray, hold promises and praise, and some expected obstacles may never arise because He hears and answers, opening the way and strengthening for duty when they stand where He can work. This assurance sustains labor despite obstacles and enemies, and workers who set aside own judgment for His guidance are assured He will direct them, a privilege to be laid hold of by claiming promises and using entrusted gifts because time is short.
Continuing to seek brings understanding of His work whose appearing is as sure as morning, and though His work may not be clear at first He is working and will continue, so people should persevere humbly and prepare the way. It brings closer communion and clearer unfolding truth, as His word as bread from heaven gives spiritual strength as food gives strength to the body. Continuing to follow closely when others call such care foolish is a steady testimony, for the Lord is faithful to do His part when His people do what He requires.
Persevering with wife and children until certainty is reached makes one an overcomer over the enemy's devising, trusting the Lord instead of feelings or human speeches, looking to Jesus and being changed into His likeness. Pursuing knowledge is a privilege and life insurance for eternal life, preparing for bliss and to see the King in His beauty, by determinedly adding grace to grace daily through prayer in daily work, while light trifling conversation hinders growth. Following on to know Him and do His bidding leads to seeing His salvation, for God suggests words that restrain others from wrong and point to life, and seekers learn by experience He guides thoughts and words to help others turn from wrong.
Accepting Jesus means conversion to the Spirit's power to preserve from temptation and give wisdom in winning souls, bringing daily individual conversion, bringing converting power into the church so members can be a blessing, and working as new conversion through conviction, discernment of truth and earnest application to the heart. Every true believer who follows on discerns in experience that Christ is the Root and Offspring of David, and as experience is perfected in the churches they discern Him as the Bright and Morning Star, beholding His works, having His mind, walking in His footsteps and bearing good works that prove they are His. This is how preparation is made to see and meet the King, the King of righteousness.
Pressing on means His character revealed in lives shaped by redeeming love in Christlike conduct, unselfish interest and kindness. Continuing to know leads to reflecting His character and transformation into His likeness step by step by self-denial made possible by grace as beholders look to Christ, receiving grace that reproduces the image of truth whose original is Christ. Following changes believers into His likeness as they behold and talk of Him, making them partakers of divine nature with corruption worked out, by diligent growth in faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity, climbing to secure election and abundant entrance into the kingdom where they shall never fall.
Studying Scripture and continually beholding Christ brings change into His image, and true knowledge produces faith that works by love and purifies the soul. Following involves continued seeking of wisdom, and as people behold God in His Word the Spirit changes them, conforms ideas to Christ, and leads toward perfection and growth in character. Those who follow the light are cheerful and fruitful and reflect light to others, showing fruitful work that they are not clouds without rain. Knowing is shown in lives that make Christ's love visible and draw people to recognize they have been with Jesus.
Following gives personal experiential knowledge of righteousness through obedience and rebirth by the Word, with open concern for the soul's highest interest and walking in truth bringing joy to watchers. Continuing to know broadens understanding beyond self to understand Christ as substitute and surety and belonging to Him as His purchased possession. Increasing knowledge enables helping and blessing others by example, with the path growing brighter unto the perfect day, conversion more decided, workers becoming vessels unto honor growing to full stature in Christ.
Those who keep seeking to know God and share knowledge will know the power of His resurrection. Following wins salvation for the seeker and for all his house, as with Cornelius, for God is interested in every person, Christ died to redeem every soul, and God answers seeking by communicating His will through heavenly messengers working with human teachers to bring full light. No one can measure the nature of God or character of Christ, so knowledge must come by living experience giving sure knowledge as certain as morning, involving treasuring faith, hope and charity.
Had truth been received and followed, light would have increased unto the perfect day. Continuing to seek brings spiritual growth in which knowledge grows, unbelief gives way, faith and activity increase, and assurance deepens, as parents learning with children find their own knowledge growing more rapidly. Pressing forward prepares people to pass through the golden gates into the city when they open to the nations that kept truth, and makes them able to bring others by example, kind speech, prayer and encouragement, meeting a multitude testifying to their help and obtaining the overcomer's reward, which is the only true higher education.
Continuing to know comes through daily trust in Christ, and discerning Christ leads to trusting Him with comfort, courage and hope. Those who look to Him and trust Him receive more light from His Word and receive His blessings. Following draws from the inexhaustible fullness in Christ and enables leading souls to the Word to learn together the certainty of His coming as sure as morning, and as man works on addition by adding grace to grace, God works on multiplication giving multiplied grace and peace and all things pertaining to life and godliness through knowledge of God and Jesus.
Continued growth brings increasing light and strength like the steady morning as part of daily growth leading to assurance of standing firm when the day of the Lord comes, applied to the continuing work of Christ bringing refreshment and blessing like former and latter rain. Following is a continuing experience in which the Spirit works in and through believers, deepening experience and knowledge, so as they behold Christ they are changed into the divine image from one stage of character to another rather than remaining unchanged. It happens as hearts respond to the Spirit through careful walking by the Word, expecting revelations of grace while moving in harmony with His will, communing with God and living ever by faith with continually increasing faith in Christ as righteousness and sanctification.
This knowledge is lived through daily beholding, cooperation and adding Christian virtues to faith, with His coming as sure as morning. Those who serve in sanitariums are to follow on to know Him so they can understand His sure dawning presence and help draw the sick to Jesus. This knowledge is to be brought to souls through work carrying light everywhere, with institutions giving visitors a hold on truth, humbling the heart and catching beams of the Sun of Righteousness, so gates open to the nations that kept truth.
Knowing comes by pursuing Him every day in cooperation with Christ, living by continual addition of virtue to faith, then knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity, while keeping eyes fixed on Jesus. Such a person does not stay where he was yesterday but moves forward, and the onward path becomes bright like dawn until at last complete in Him. Those who follow step by step receive increasing light and discern God's intense love for every soul, and people who continue to seek can become fit to understand His work, not ministers only but humble consecrated people from ordinary walks.
Following enables people to represent Christ before the world. It gives assurance to one who is to use God-given skill to glorify His name and refuse close partnership with the disobedient. He helps those who commit lives to Him and separate from corrupt influences, bringing growing light, joy, hope and comfort. Marvelous blessings are promised to faithful humble followers who keep pressing on.
Following on to know truth as in Jesus brings ongoing development, increasing faith and holiness and growing experience, pursued diligently in Christ's school, for without continued growth experience loses freshness and power. Knowing requires continuing step by step, and failing to heed instruction and advance leaves people vulnerable to deception, disconnected with weak faith, little hope and few good works. It means seeking a rich experience, humbling the heart, and showing knowledge by blessing others through purity, integrity and faithful performance of Christian and practical duties in ordinary life.
It means individually learning of Christ who becomes hope and crown of rejoicing, the opposite of copying defective leaders who unsettle weak faith, requiring watching, praying, reading and obeying the Word so faith is strengthened. Keeping on without losing courage in strong belief includes giving received light to others, striving to become fitted to reach people where they are and moving forward step by step. It means maintaining a living connection, allowing sin, temper and wrong dispositions to be overcome through Christ's blood and the testimony of His Word in readiness for His return in glory.
Those who separate from deceptive schemes and continue seeking will know Him as those sanctified by truth. It means walking uprightly, making steady progress and standing firm in Christ, which is the safe path toward heaven. The church must continue seeking, and as people trust God and treat one another with kindness and truth their own souls are watered. It means loving God and His commandments, obeying His Word, following the Redeemer instead of fashions, and watching unto prayer while working for a heavenly home.
Those who follow will know Him and know the Saviour as Helper and God, and at last enter to see the King in His beauty through opened gates with right to the tree of life and to the city, to go no more out where there is no tempter and no more risks. It means having God increase faith to do His will more perfectly, remaining faithful and true and glorifying His name as long as life is spared. Those baptized in faith are to keep following step by step, and heaven's powers will be with them.
It means learning His will in His Word and preparing for His work instead of going contrary to commands, enabling even parents to represent Christ in bringing up children. Continuing to seek brings clearer understanding of surrendering own way and will, receiving enlightenment from the Sun of Righteousness, with safety only in following His footsteps, while failing to follow leaves without that light in constant peril of loss. It means a working trusting faith that takes hold of God, coming into obedience without self-exaltation, walking humbly while seeking to save souls, and coming where Christ can be claimed as Saviour, knowing by evidence in experience.
It means advancing under the Bible's guidance toward the immortal inheritance, with His peace rewarding day by day, directing and keeping from falling. Continuing in humble obedience leads to increasing knowledge of Him and His Word. Those who follow grow in grace and knowledge, and by contemplating Christ's beauty and realizing His presence through faith they receive a foretaste of heavenly joy. Continuing to seek Him earnestly in prayer brings the joy of the Lord in the present life, as preparation for eternal life and for bearing God's searching test of character.
God is ready to impart to those who follow on, and this pursuit is a privilege leading to a life shaped by God's Word and to everlasting life through Christ. He wants every person humbly to keep seeking in prayer, laying hold on provision made at cost of His only begotten Son who laid aside robe and crown and clothed divinity with humanity so the world may have life measuring with God's life, living under His guardianship kept from falling under powers of darkness. Continuing to seek is expressed in following the path of righteousness, self-denial and self-sacrifice with pure practical zeal, and by striving for victory at every step putting away disunion and refusing one's own way, which is the way to enter through the gates into the city.
Following on to know Him more perfectly requires fixing eyes on the mark of the high calling in Christ Jesus. It is carried out under the Spirit's guidance by following where He directs and doing what He commands, with settled resolve joined with keeping commandments and bringing others to truth. All the loyal who follow find sure footing in a plain way cast up for the ransomed, and the humble hear error faithfully delineated, understand truth made plain, renounce falsehood and return to allegiance, walking securely and not condemned for error held before truth was plain.
Following is done by most earnest prayer and humbling the soul in obedience to His voice, and all who do this will be strengthened and guided, including fathers and mothers to be patterns of piety, which is how preparation is made to see and meet the King. This pursuit belongs with beholding Jesus and adding virtues, done by taking His Word into mind and heart, listening and obeying to the letter, coming under discipline, departing from iniquity and coming into right relation to God, which means everything to those who hear. Continuing in the effort means following actively by faith and gaining the experience of learning from Him, and those who do so receive wisdom that endures trial.
Those who follow will truly know Him with knowledge as sure as dawn and constantly increasing light. Those who keep seeking will receive light and power, and this promise may be claimed while mercy lingers, calling for earnest effort and daily growth in grace. Following means seeking to know Him more perfectly through ongoing communion, bound by love for Christ in united sentiment and action with brightness, comfort and peace, with increased faith and desire to do His will more perfectly in continual day-by-day pursuit.
Following day by day means doing God's will, experiencing daily conversion while working now for children's and family's salvation so they are fitted for His kingdom and prepared together for judgment and His soon coming, rejoicing to stand with His faithful children at His coming to claim salvation. It means being fully converted and serving with entire affections instead of being half converted and giving up under trial, believing in Christ, turning from sins and letting Him remove hindrances to perfection, while He intercedes, seals and fashions character, so those who do this will see God's salvation. Knowing comes by patiently following, walking carefully and softly before God instead of hurrying into a responsible place, thereby perfecting character through simplicity, prayerful thought and daily self-surrender, since true brightness comes only from God by reflecting heavenly light.
Continuing to pursue brings steady growth from strength to strength by giving self without reservation, letting Him lead and doing the work He gives for souls instead of holding to own enterprises, while refusal wastes time and labor with no reward. Following more decidedly through entire surrender in heart, soul and strength is the only safety from coming short of grace, giving stability under all circumstances and clearer insight into truth. It means seeking wisdom, faithfully using abilities, doing what His Word says, and as people advance God fulfills promises, for God will help those who follow on.
Jesus gives strength to follow this path, and God's grace makes it possible to return to loyalty and obey His commandments. Christ endured suffering so people could become branches in the true vine, study His life and follow on to know Him. Knowing means continuing to seek, gathering divine light shown through good works, making believers fruitful in helping others accept truth, for those who follow receive light, evidence and truth that must be shared for others' salvation.
Following means trusting Him step by step, with assurance He will not forsake them and will remain their Helper. It includes helping the younger ones and being a blessing even to the very young, and those who do so will be acknowledged by Christ when He comes in the clouds as His servants, having light with the glory of the Lord as rearward. Continuing to know leads to transformation into His likeness on a step-by-step path made possible by divine grace, and those who decide to follow every ray will receive increased light, with lesser beams increasing to greater light.
Humbly seeking leads to growth in understanding and to the standard of Christian character by receiving riches of Scripture as spiritual food, which requires an opened softened heart and removal of cherished idols, with truth unfolding in continuing growth. It is a personal earnest pursuit giving certainty of His help, done by seeking Him with whole attention in earnest prayer, even in pain, restlessness and sleeplessness, praying for comfort and peace only Jesus gives and for self-control, with complete distrust of self. It desires right words of lips and godly meditations of heart, strengthened with simple trustful genuine faith without presumption, relying wholly on promise and asking Him to keep lips from evil.
Those who have given themselves to the Lord must keep advancing daily by seeking Him individually for daily conversion and coming to know Him in obedience, and parents especially must do this to set a right example and manage home discipline by the Word, otherwise through neglect many souls will be lost. To follow means to love the light and come to the light even when it reproves deeds, while those who refuse lest deeds be reproved and insist on their own way will not follow on. Continuing by confessing sin, making Christ the best friend, and being taught and led by God with a pleasant disposition free from passion gives certainty His appearing is as sure as dawn, and fits believers to meet Him in peace and welcome Him as the God waited for who saves.
Knowing involves continuing to seek and obeying His commandments, and He reveals Himself to the obedient, with parents and children both to follow on, while neglecting children's spiritual education brings accountability in judgment. It means walking humbly with God, keeping close to the Saviour, following Christ's example and remaining faithful to God's law, so through faith God's peace dwells in the heart, with obedience bound up with eternal salvation. It is a privilege to persist in seeking, for knowing Him rightly is life eternal, pursued by earnestly seeking His will, walking in harmony with it, and praying for saving grace to guide each step.
Following describes a personal experience from deliverance from despair to knowing Christ's love, continued from that time onward. Jesus' sympathy and love plead, woo and draw believers to follow His footsteps, with daily lessons for all including elders and deacons that become an example instructing others, while truth abiding in the heart sanctifies and binds the willing soul to the Redeemer. His going forth is known progressively as faith increases and barriers are wrestled through, so truth sanctifies, animates and constrains with ever more decided influence.
People are to follow His leading as its light comes like the morning, and God may guide through changes in life to prevent stagnation and build character. Putting trust in God, believing, acting according to His will, and continually remaining in praise leads to seeing light in His Word. Walking in the light and studying Christ's revelation in His works and providences leads along the path of holiness, peace and rest.
The newborn soul given a new heart must keep following until made certain of His faithful going forth as morning and dawn, and this knowing is a science worth studying bringing peace and assurance, for as one draws near to God one finds God drawing near in return. Continuing to seek gives confidence in His prepared way, and when people stand where He can open the way He will do so and strengthen them for duty. Those who keep seeking will receive a crown of rejoicing when work is judged faithfully done, and those who decide to follow will receive an everlasting inheritance.
The verse calls for continuing, following on, and persisting in seeking to know the Lord by laying hold by faith on Christ to carry out the Word, receiving daily divine knowledge enabling purity, undefiled life and spiritual strength, with increasing light, earnest prayer bringing present joy as preparation for eternity, a life shaped by God's Word, and growth in righteousness, self-denial and zeal. Those who turn from idols to God and give themselves sincerely to Christ's service find in Christ what they need for Christian character and satisfaction of spiritual hunger, with assurance His coming is as sure as morning.
Spirit's Former and Latter Rain
The rain is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, with the former rain given at the opening of the gospel and at Pentecost to bring up the seed and cause it to spring up and grow, and the latter rain to come at its close to ripen the harvest for the final warning under the third angel. The latter rain promised for the last days will be more abundant than the former. He who comes as the latter and former rain thus shows that the gospel work begins and ends with a manifestation of God's power, the former rain as the outpouring at the opening bringing the seed to growth and the latter rain as a further outpouring at its close ripening the harvest.
Those who fail to receive and value the early rain of the Spirit's earlier work will not recognize or understand the value of the latter rain of His later outpouring, for knowing the Lord involves continuing to seek Him whose coming is as certain and life-giving as the morning and the rains. Following on is connected with a future experience like Pentecost in which people of many nations will hear the gospel in their own languages, be convicted, and carry it widely.
The verse applies to spiritual renewal so that the message grows stronger and broader through the Spirit's power, which quickens and strengthens believers in the truth. Following on to know the Lord involves a growing experience as the morning light grows brighter until full day, and when His gifts are used faithfully the Spirit works with His people so that their words and actions show that the Spirit is guiding them. Keeping on seeking to know the Lord is therefore joined to receiving the Holy Spirit's power, with His coming as certain and dependable as the dawn and as renewing as rain upon the earth.
The verse is an invitation to follow on to know the Lord by walking humbly before God in repentance and conversion with thorough change of life, especially in the household, responding to the great light given, denying self and yielding the life to God's guidance, and overcoming worldliness and self-indulgence. Heeding it brings rich blessing and prepares to meet the Lord amid the perils of the last days and the coming time of trouble and keeps the eternal rewards prepared for those who walk in all His ways, while refusing it leaves unprepared and causes loss of those rewards.
Prophecy for Last Days
Hosea 6:1-11 prophesies the state of the world just prior to the second coming when the end of all things is at hand and iniquity abounds. This abounding iniquity comes because men have transgressed the law and broken the everlasting covenant given on condition of obedience by continual transgression. At that time the world becomes more and more under the sway of seducing spirits as men turn away from God and His righteous government. Men professing godliness then indulge their own traits of character and become self-indulgent and self-centered unless conscientiously under the control of God.
God's people are filled with the Holy Ghost at the commencement of the time of trouble and go forth to proclaim the Sabbath more fully. The promise of certain knowledge of Him and increasing light for which to thank God every day belongs to the present time when the last message of mercy is being borne to the world. His going forth is as sure and bright as morning to those who follow on to know Him. In that present time all are called to take their appointed place and work every neglected corner with consecrated influence.
Generations had failed to follow on to know Him, though God had provided what was needed for His word to be fulfilled and the gospel to reach the world. Knowing Him requires continuing to seek Him rather than being content with present knowledge. As God's people prepare to stand in the judgment, His coming and work for them are as certain and refreshing as the morning and as the former and latter rains. The call now applies to opposers of His will who must turn to Him, because their actions go before them into judgment and each person will stand or fall individually.
Continuing to know the living God is done by following His Word and obeying it, and obedience to the Word keeps people from stumbling. Loving Jesus supremely and loving one's neighbor as oneself are the way to follow on to know Him, bringing brightness to one's path so that those connected with such a person will not stumble. This pursuit prepares them for the great day of God.
Warnings Against Neglect
To follow on is to continue faithfully, and that continuance is how His working is known to be as certain as the dawn. Even the least dishonesty mars the conscience and separates from God, and unless repented of it grows into unfaithfulness in much. No plea of ignorance remains, since every sin from least to greatest is transgression of God's law.
Those who claim to believe God's Word but do not practice it are not following on to know the Lord nor to know that His coming is as sure as the morning. Following Him is joined with conversion and sanctification of the whole person, and with growth in faith and grace. Faithful works and conduct show that this pursuit is real, and dependence on Him prepares His workers for experiences requiring entire reliance upon Him. Those who merely profess belief but do not practice the truth are not following this call to persist in seeking Him.
Continuing to seek would have led the Jews to recognize Christ and welcome the light sent from heaven. As that light is received, understanding grows toward full brightness and lives are transformed by the Spirit into living witnesses to Christ, for the Lord's coming is as sure and bright as the dawn. If those who had the light had pursued that knowledge, the church could have advanced in spiritual understanding and many souls could have been added, but resistance to the truth delayed that work and left the world in comparative darkness. Walking in the light already given and pressing onward would have made the church's path grow brighter. Those who ought to walk in the light should press on in this knowing, which brings years of advance in spiritual knowledge and adds many souls, while failure wastes time and labor counteracting workers inside the church who stand against the truth God sends and leaves the world in comparative darkness.
Many fail to follow on to know Him even after receiving all the evidence and counsel they need, and they must value and obey the counsel already given rather than turn from it. Responsibility is measured by the light He has privileged a person to receive. No one will be judged only by the light actually accepted, but by the light that might have been had if pursuit of the knowledge of the Lord had continued, so it is duty to appreciate heaven-sent privileges and place oneself in the channel of light rather than forget or neglect it. Not pressing on is choosing one's own way in selfishness that works against truth and righteousness.
Love for pleasure gatherings eclipses heaven's light and separates the soul from God, while pressing on ascends heavenward under God's guiding brightness. Pressing on to know the Lord brings assured knowledge of God coming forth as surely as morning light, and makes refined and sanctified qualifications a channel of light for saving souls and helping others. The verse calls people who have lost the evidence of communion with God to keep seeking to know the Lord, linked with His sure, morning-like appearing, as a call to respond to God and be worked by Him. Continuing in faith and hope to know the Lord brings His presence and rich blessings, and He strengthens and heals those who walk humbly with Him.
Knowing the Lord requires continuing to follow Him, and those who do not follow on are vulnerable to the enemy's deception, mistaking darkness for light and falsehood for truth. Those who cling to old habits or deny Christ miss the blessing they could receive at each step as they follow on. Because people do not follow on they see only a glimpse of His glory in this world, since knowledge here is limited. Learning His lessons here prepares for heaven, where He will teach what cannot be understood now, in the heavenly courts where the Saviour will teach things incomprehensible here.
Those who continue seeking may know that His coming and action are sure, like the reliable arrival of morning. Had young people continued to know the Lord they could have recognized this certainty, but harmful companions and practices place them in danger unless they repent and are converted. Harmful associations can lead young people away from the truth and keep them from knowing what God requires and longs to do for them. Those who received the truth but do not grow in knowledge of God or become mature representatives are reproved, and the verse calls them to keep growing toward Christian maturity.
Had the truth in Jesus been received and followed on, light would have increased unto the perfect day. Continuing to learn to know God keeps a person from moving forward presumptuously and from letting vanity corrupt principle beyond remedy and leading souls away from God, truth and righteousness into the enemy's ranks. It means having distrust of self, receiving warnings and counsels, and discerning personal danger. Those who follow on receive light, evidence and truth from God, and this knowledge must be shared with others for their salvation, while keeping that light to oneself rather than communicating it shows need for conversion.
Those who keep seeking to know God and share the knowledge they receive will know the power of Christ's resurrection. Continuing to pursue knowledge brings steady growth from strength to strength and from character to character, by giving self to God without reservation, letting Him lead and mold the life, and doing the work He gives for the salvation of souls instead of holding to one's own enterprises and independent judgment. Where this following is refused, time and labor are wasted with no reward in this life or the life to come, and those who do not follow on waste time and leave the world in darkness.
Daily Life Application
Teachers are to remain learners, continually receiving grace and wisdom and keeping minds open to instruction from the great Teacher, so their work advances into harmony with His will. As workers in the school follow on, blessing rests on parents and children, who are to seek His blessing, study His character, and follow Him in every part of life.
Young men are called to persistent seeking through close fellowship with Christ, and children are to be taught to follow the Lord as they seek eternal life. For young people this is continual effort to grow, to live by faith in Christ and identify with Him, to seek daily victories and prepare character to help and teach others rather than live or work carelessly.
As parents learn the Word alongside children, continuing to seek brings increasing knowledge of truth and deeper confidence, unbelief gives way to faith and active service, assurance grows, and prayer becomes more earnest and sincere. Seeking Him and making Him known go together, for as parents actively teach and serve with children faith grows, unbelief fades, and experience gains ardor, assurance and satisfaction, with knowledge growing more rapidly.
Workers who go forward cheerfully in self-denying labor, leaving families and braving hardship and danger to reach souls in out-of-the-way places, will find His appearing as certain as morning. Such determination to put His cause first is guarded, regarded, honored and cared for, every sacrifice is seen by One who sees the end from the beginning, and success and victory and blessing are given that lead others to follow the example.
The promise belongs to obeying truth through trials, bringing strength, sustaining through conflict, and preparing for His coming and the eternal reward of the righteous. It calls for appreciating and using talents of words, faith, hope and charity, and for continuing to become acquainted with Christ and His truth until understanding is opened, light is given, and daily conversion leads to seeing His salvation among others.
Guidance about what is right comes by seeking Jesus and bringing every plan to Him for approval. When facing change of work and questions about pay, keeping on with an eye single to God's glory and not making means or higher wages the test makes His going forth plain and certain like morning. Higher education itself is understanding Christ's words and teachings and following on, knowing His going forth is prepared as morning.
The church is to continue seeking until His coming and presence are as sure as morning, with precious light shining on commandment-loving people whom Jesus regards with mercy and special care though destruction is meditated against them, so members speak with faith, hope and courage. All who connect with the church must follow on, with fathers and mothers bringing children up in nurture and admonition, requiring obedience and restraint in the household and diligent work with young men under light shining every Sabbath, not letting youth do as they please in ways that dishonor God.
Following His directions and receiving the Spirit's work brings assurance His coming and work are as certain as morning, and He goes with teachers as they leave to work elsewhere. The same following is diligent learning that equips workers to help others and share what was learned, with minds sharpened and knowledge given for the work. Gathering and using principles and privileges within reach leads to valuing others as bought by Christ's blood, and hope of meeting them face to face inspires love and tenderness and devotion of God-given powers and privileges to Him.
One who loves truth and continues seeking while treated rightly by others will know His coming as sure and refreshing as morning. Those sensible of what God requires keep pressing on and gain certainty of His coming forth, and oldest to youngest are to keep an eye single to God's glory and stand where Christ's blessing can rest, producing everyday Christian action through daily conversion and living connection by true faith, with blessing in rich abundance and testimony from truly converted hearts.
Daily following to learn eternal life is so simple a little child can understand it, done by following Christ's leadings each day and studying His life as a humble tempted man who overcame as all must. Those who keep following find His appearing certain and bright like dawn, see how much God through Christ has done for them, learn Christ suffered beyond any human suffering to make known salvation, and respond with a life conformed to His example so none of His benefits are lost, for His life shows what God will do for His children and that severe trials cannot surpass what He endured as the way, truth and life.
As the sun climbs gathering brightness, His people are to advance and not stand still, making decided changes in methods and plans to place His cause on a higher basis. Loving the Scriptures and practicing truth at whatever cost of self-denial brings growing knowledge under a Teacher who molds heart and mind to understand the Word in its true light with settled certainty sure as dawn, glorifying God because not one word fails until prophecy becomes history, as sacrificial offerings prefiguring Christ met fulfillment in the death of the Son of God.
Earnest seeking to understand what to do to inherit eternal life belongs to parents and children together understanding solemn obligations and laboring intelligently for family salvation, calling those verging on the eternal world to prepare for the great crisis by sensing responsibility for children's spiritual education. Following His directions brings more to conversion, and at this point in earth's history priority is to follow the Bible, not to plan life chiefly around making money or avoiding reproach.
Those who follow will truly know Him with knowledge sure as dawn and constantly increasing light, seen when parents kneel and pray with weeping for disobedient children, refuse harsh beating, talk and work and read with them and bind hearts to their own, so God gives them their children to follow with them, with promises worked out for all who humble hearts and take hold of infinite power. Families claiming to be Christians who follow will overcome all hasty speech, with husband and wife speaking kindly and seeking to bless each other through daily conversion, religious cultivation of divine power, sanctified will called into action, the Prince of peace abiding in the house, and copying Jesus come as human example.
The desire to become righteous is met by continuing to seek, with His coming as sure and prepared as morning. Workers in responsible positions are called to earnest effort to know more perfectly, realizing the importance of the times, taking determined purpose to be on the Lord's side, consecrating heart and soul to service, becoming laborers together with God, and gaining deeper experience than yet obtained essential to triumph over sin.
Continuing to seek gives more strength and puts on much higher ground through loving Him supremely and neighbor as self, requiring many lessons in Christ's school in kindness and skillful dealing instead of oppression before fitness for heaven. Such following requires a right course and continued spiritual learning, linked with assurance His coming is as certain as morning.
Teaching children Scripture and obedience is part of following, with parents and teachers doing their part faithfully while God makes the impression on young hearts, and His coming is sure and refreshing as morning and rains. The promise of blessing rests on parents and children who continue seeking, and both must keep seeking by heeding all commandments including children's obedience, with revelation to the obedient and judgment on the disobedient.
Parents need daily conversion and must follow on to know more perfectly, or families are left without needed education for eternal welfare, including responsibility to understand and teach children spiritual matters and prepare for eternal life with renewal like rain on earth. Knowing involves close living connection with heaven cultivated through humble simplicity like little children, with precious blessings promised to followers.
Persevering in humble service with confidence in blessing brings knowledge and sight of His work sure as morning. Workers must keep seeking rather than being religious only at times, and remaining faithful in appointed labor brings trust He will give victories.
Following is an ongoing way of life in Christ's example by studying His work and helping the needy spiritually and physically, lifting the fallen, relieving the oppressed, encouraging the faint-hearted, walking in His footsteps as His helping hand. It means loving light and coming to light even when deeds are reproved, while refusing light to avoid exposure and choosing one's own way is the opposite of following. Continuing to seek brings assurance His coming and help are as sure as morning, with renewed conversion and sanctification, wholehearted seeking, praise glorifying God, and fruit in working for others' salvation.
Assurance sure as dawn holds even when the way is narrow with obstacles and enemies encountered. As parents learn the Word with children, knowledge grows more rapidly, unbelief gives way, faith and activity increase, and assurance and confidence deepen. Patience in learning belongs to following, for teachers and students should not rush into changes before ready, lest without the Spirit Scripture be misunderstood and confusion result instead of light. None are to imitate any person, but each is to follow step by step to know Him personally, standing in moral independence with mind molded only by the Spirit and refusing to let human influence divert from duty.
