Hosea 7:16
They return, but not to the most High: they are like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt. They return, but not to the most High: they are like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.
The return spoken of is false because it stops short and does not reach to the Most High. It is a turning that leaves God out, and therefore it cannot be counted as true repentance or restoration. Like a deceitful bow, the people prove unreliable and unable to fulfill their purpose, bending wrong and missing the mark when tested. Their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue, destroyed because of their angry speech. This ruin shall become their derision in the land of Egypt, making them an object of mockery there.
