Hosea 8:6

For from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.

The calf of Samaria originated in Israel itself, fashioned by a workman, and for that very reason it is not God. Its worship grew out of Israel's apostasy in setting up altars at Bethel and Dan. Being merely a human-made object, it had no power to save Israel.

It has cast off those who worship it. God's anger is kindled against its worshipers because they cling to it and fail to attain to innocence. The declaration is a dread sentence upon evils grown incurable after long forbearance, pronounced when Ephraim joined to idols is left alone and the days of visitation and recompense have come.

The calf is doomed to be destroyed by being broken in pieces. That breaking was part of the judgment the ten tribes were to reap for that apostasy. Its fulfillment brings mourning over the calves of Beth-aven, the departure of their glory, and the carrying of the calf to Assyria for a present to King Jareb.

In present-day application, the same pattern appears when human authority makes and exalts a false sabbath, treating a human enactment as sacred while trampling God's law.
